On and off for many years.
Does anyone know of a campsite near Stockport (not Elm Beds - been there and not impressed) ? We need to be near Stepping Hill Hospital in May awaiting the arrival of Grandson #3. Mum is unwell and it isn't certain if she will go to term or not so we need to be on standby to take Grandson #1 to school and collect him. Usually we stay at The Burrs CMC but that is the other side of Manchester, gets busy and would be expensive for a long stay.

We've stayed at Elm beds a few times now and agree it's not ideal although it is cheap and cheerful as they say, i suppose you get what you pay for.

We've also used Windy Harbour in Glossop, think the owner is called Graham ? better in some ways although it's no 5 star site... parking on gravel and a decent pub next door (Graham used to own that) and some Lama's in the field next door.

Beyond that you need to venture further out and we wanted to avoid that as we too were making the Stepping Hill run on most of our recent trips back.

PS: parking with the van at SH is as you can imagine a bit of a nightmare so we always used the Sainsbury's on the A6 and i did my shopping there, only 200mtrs away.

There's a C&MC CL at New Mills Marina about 20 minutes away from the hospital? Never stayed but seems to get decent write-ups albeit maybe a bit industrialised around it.

It is right next to the A6 so super convenient for the hospital commute. We ruled it out as we aren't members of any clubs where it rains 24/7/365:LOL:

For info
From Stockport or picadilly the 192 stepping Hill bus drops off at the hospital, there is also a 192 that goes on to the Hazel Grove Park and ride. The 192 from Hazel Grove Park and ride does not drop off at the hospital but there are stops outside on the A6 either side of the hospital road where the traffic lights are.
The Hazel Grove Park and ride has a height barrier and is only suitable for cars BTW.
Buses are every 10 mins

As The Big Yin said of Scotland “there’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing.”(y);):giggle:

yup, last year we we rocked up to a site in Haverigg in August, we were donned in full European summer gear, experienced local campers kitted out in wellies and thermals:eek: it was worth it for the fish and chips and super nice beach rides though

White Croft Farm C-L. SK22 3AH. Is actually in Derbyshire but only 7 Miles away from Stockport.?

CCC site at Hayfield, about 12 miles away. And a nice pub nearby.

We've been at Royal Vale near Knutsford for the past 3 months which is fine, all pitches fully serviced and they do discount weekly rates. It's about 1/2hr from Stepping Hill hospital

There is a campsite on Station Road, Chapel-en-le-Frith. It’s a few minutes walk from the station. Chapel is on the Buxton to Manchester line and there is a train every half an hour in the day. The nearest station to Stepping Hill Hospital is Woodsmoor. Also there is a bus which goes from Buxton to Manchester (199) which stops in Chapel and stops outside Stepping Hill.

I spoken with my Daughter-in-Law and it looks like public transport will be a non-starter as we will need to take the elder Grandson to and from school (the opposite direction to the hospital of course). We can't stay in their house and although originally we were supposed to be staying in her Mum's B&B it now turns out the daughter-in -law did not check that out with her Mum and the B&B is fully booked.

I asked about getting insurance and using her car whilst she was in hospital (son needs his car for work) but that came back as a resounding "NO". So it looks like we will have to take the car as well as the van :( More expense. Martin thinks we should just book a Travel Lodge and use our car taking the electric cool box and the multi-cooker plus crockery. I'm so churned up about her attitude I'm tempted to say we can't do it but that would be so grossly unfair to GS#1 - of course she is playing on that.

We have stayed at some of the sites mentioned before and found the journey to our son's a bit of a nightmare :( He lives near the Stockport pyramid so we would be scooting from where we end up staying to his house to the school and the hospital and all variations of the same - plus running round getting any little thing that she has a fancy to ........ I just hope she is in and out quickly (last time she was in for a month) so we are not needed for long.

Anyway I am very grateful to all - and will make a note of all the sites to discuss with Martin.

I think we have stayed there in the past but I don't remember much about it ...... we've also been to the Chapel-en-le-Firth site mentioned above by Petew One of them was tight to get into and Martin said "never again".

Depending on what time you travel knutsford could take over an hour

We found a really nice CL or CS near Knutsford but it takes a long time to get through the traffic, especially if we are going backwards and forwards several times a day.

Having lived out in the wilderness for 20 years I am no longer used to the grind of city traffic (farm traffic on single track roads doesn't worry me!) and am concerned about getting to where we need to be on time.

I bet you didn't like the bushes on the narrow entrance at Elm Beds (just after the bridge) we could only just squeeze through with a slight scratching noise each time:oops:

Spot on ....... and the parked cars - and that was with the old van which was slightly more narrow than the new van. Then there were the "facilities" or rather the squelch through the mud to get to them and the CDP - I hope it was mud ............

You're too polite, if being honest we avoided using "the facilities" choosing to empty the toilet cassette at my Mother-in-Laws:LOL:

Definitely need a better alternative though for this Summer's trip back over.

Believe it or not next to us last Summer at Elm Beds was a retired couple from Italy, they were there for 3wks:oops:

Last time we were there the people on the adjoining pitch were French and they did their washing up in the sink set into the ground (the grey water disposal - clogged up with who knows what). Mum laid out a yoga type mat and laid flat on it so she could reach down into the sink.

I felt so sorry for them.

The static site looks okay to be honest - and the walk along the canal and along the cycle track between Marple and Macclesfield are great. I think access is the major issue and it would not cost a fortune to update the touring site - someone just has to have the will to do it. Maybe the touring site is part of the planning permission but it is the statics that pay the bills.

All I will say, Is your not on your own, we have one like that. Fortunately now, they (G-K`s) are far too old and we just cut out the "middle man", and go straight to source.
