I am learning fast 😊
Can anyone recommend any good campsites in Spanish and French Pyrenees? I am after campsites and wild camping. Thanking you in advance for your help. Mou

We ve only been that way the once, however found a couple of decent ones.

Les Angles, was a free huge aire at the ski station car park. Beautiful views, 10 minute downhill walk to the town which is OK and a 20 minute walk back. You can park at the bottom of the piste

The other one is a bit left field. 42.503843, 2.179207 near Prats Balaguer. The spot (if you can get it) is a parking spot for hippies to walk to a set of man made baths that are fed from piping hot water coming out of the mountain. Half the people there will be stoned, half will be naked, there will be a couple in the woods, but it is well worth a visit. Known as the Holy Grail of the Hippy Trail. I would recommend it as a life experience type thing. The walk is about half hour up and down to the baths.
If you cant get in at the parking, there is parking in the village which wouldnt be an issue from what i remember. I also think the little yellow train goes past there and you can see it across the valley

If you're wild camping look out for the 'Attention! Ours' signs. A couple of years ago touring on my motorbike I had just wild pitched my tent among trees in the Pyrenees approaching the Col du Tourmalet when two gendarmes stopped to chat with cyclists and warned me of bears in the woods. Bears were being re-introduced but the farmers put out poisoned honey as they believe that the bears kill their sheep. Apparently bears with guts ache lack bonhomie.

I risked the bears but a had trouble at a biking rally a couple of days later with feral cats shredding my tent while I was away at a bar.

We always stay at the Aire in Jaca, which is free and has the usual water/waste disposal facilities. Technically Jaca, a lovely town, isn't in the Pyrenees but more in the foothills.

Thank you for this. I will keep an eye on this. Obviously, in a MH, one is less vulnerable. But it is not a problem for bears, especially if they are hungry and they can smell food

Or for anyone with a dog tethered or free outside.

We came back from Spain in winter via the Bielsa tunnel around ten years ago, we spent 3 nights at Piau Engaly on the French side in a large paid aire for the ski resort, I would imagine it free in summer.
On the Spanish side we had one night at Pena Montanesa http://www.penamontanesa.com/

After leaving Lourdes on the D821 I've stopped at this aire at Argos-Vidalos near Vidalos on the D9218B before entering the Pyrenees proper.
There's an Aldi about 2 mls before it and a camp site with bar and resto about 400yds before it.

A hundred yards up the road there's what appears to be free parking.

We enjoyed the municipal campsite in Saint Jean Pied de Port - good value, and the town is interesting. Many towns in th Pyrenees are on the Camino to Santiago de Compostella.

We stayed there when we did the Camino about 3 years ago. Good base to start the journey.

Havwe you got apps for park4night, searchforsites and campercontact? If not that should give you all you need. They all work free if on-line and are not very expensive to download the off-line versions, for when there is no signal and for planning purposes.

There is a very nice Aire at Gavarnie(plenty of room on the parking both sides of the road) with good walking in the area.

There are lots of good campsites around the French and Spanish Pyrénées. Have stopped in many, lots are very close to good walks if that's what you want. Have both camped and Camping Car in them. The Pyrénées cover a massive area and varied geography. Stayed in these last year, nice sites on the Spanish side.
Enjoy the Pyrénées.
View from the garden this morning snow covered Haute Pyrénées & Pic du Midi.

Pyrenees Natura at Estaing, west of Argeles Gazost. Located amongst amazing scenery and spotless facilities. Been several times and it remains one of our all time favourite sites.

We went to this site a few years ago. Great for the tour de France which looped around the site. We did think that the site below, by the lake, was in a nicer position.
