Just out of interest, how long must the van be missing before the insurance policy pays out?, anyone know?

With my car the insurance refused to pay out until it had been stolen for 6 weeks.

When you’ve been through what this lady has over the last couple of months even if there was an alarm fitted she may not have known how to use it or just not put it on I think allowances need to be made for her(n)(n)

I wonder what in percentage terms the number of stolen recovered Moho's is? Insurance companies would know this I guess.
I know that some may not want them recovered, even if not damaged badly....not sure how I would go on that one.
Yet we all want it found and returned in one piece for this poor lady.

The advantage with the Fiat has always been the additional layers of security necessary to program a new key into the vehicle. The way in which the Ford vulnerability works was not possible on the Ducato without physically interrogating the ECU, which was time consuming and needed a computer rather than the small easily concealed device used on Fords.

It now seems that this may have been cracked and similar devices are coming into circulation.

BROKEN LINK

If you do nothing else, fit an OBD lock.

This is indeed terrible. The poor lady does not need all this and my heart goes out to her. :(

Now fellow Funsters, use this ladies plight as a lesson. Make super sure your MH is secure when you leave it, even if it is on your drive. Do not rely on what the manufacturer supplies you with. If I gave you my keys ours would not start, when the door is opened it’s alarm would go off AND it is linked to the house, so the house alarm would go off. It has motion sensors inside in case they come through a window. Plus a tracker and other stuff. I know nothing is perfect, but they would have to be, electronically, very clever to take it. Put simply, it’s not difficult, a days work, before the horse bolts, do something about it. :gum:

Mines been ‘vanbitzed’.

There’s no evidence that is how it was stolen it might be worth waiting to find out first before speculating.(y)(y)(y)

I wasn't intending to say that it was how this particular van had been stolen. I think it's important to mention though, that where theft of Sevel vans without access to the original or copied keys has been nigh on impossible up to now without knowing the ECU PIN, a recent although admittedly small apparent increase in Sevel motorhome thefts has been noticeable to me and the recent availability of a compromise device might be linked. It's surely better to warn that these devices are now out there and the steps that can be taken to guard against them than to bury your head in the sand. You might think £3K is a lot to pay for an ECU reprogrammer and a turbo key, but the people who buy them will get that back with the theft of one van, make a tidy profit and still have the kit in their possession to steal tens more.

Sorry, I'd forgotten since I retired that whatever you do as a policeman, it's always wrong according to somebody

Not saying your wrong at all I was in fact a crime prevention officer for Wiltshire Police my advice would be spend the money on a good alarm and non starter or Tracker.(y)(y)(y) That way at least you get security for everything else instead of 3k on reprogrammer and key and probably spend less.(y)(y)(y)

It's the baddies who think nothing of spending £3K on a programmer and turbo key. I'm not suggesting owners need to spend that sort of money on prevention. Quite agree about a good alarm and non-starter, but a little more than £100 spent on an OBD lock in addition will stop them even trying to override the immobiliser with one of those kits, particularly in conjunction with a good alarm, since time is not on their side. They may not be able to start a van fitted with a non-starter either, but by the time they have found that out they've already plugged in their device and effectively bricked your ECU, leaving you a £1K or more bill to get it fixed. I was an autocrime examiner for 16 years and have seen all sorts of tricks including how they can circumvent alarms or at least make it appear that its not your alarm going off in the middle of the night even if you can hear it. I'm not going to explain how on here though, for obvious reasons ;)

So sad for this ladies loss of her husband and now motorhome :(

Mine is in the drive, wheel covers on , alarmed, Disklok on and visible, seats folded and bed down.
Sounds like that isn’t enough .

How good is an OBD lock ?

How about, OldHappyChappy, removing an appropriate fuse or fuses as a short term solution, with a view to sumfink more permanent and suffffisticattted in the future. :)

I have a cat one alarm immobiliser and hoped that would stop any attempt even if they got the Disklok off.

What terrible news, hope it gets sorted soon, but almost certainly out of the country by now.
We have a W reg Autotrail with the removeable steering wheel, plus whel clamp and drive post, also alarmed.
But as i was once told " Locks only keep honest people out"
Glad to see that the police have solved another crime with a crime number to claim on insurance. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So sorry for this Lady hope it's found soon undamaged, thieves of all sorts are despicable lowlife, but, as Police struggle to catch criminals , and when they do a lot of courts smack them on the wrists perhaps give them Community work , this must demoralize the Police. we should at least do what the Americans do as I have seen in Florida, gangs in Orange overalls clearing and maintaining Roadsides with Warders overseeing them with Shotguns just in case !!
We are also weak on discipline due to the current Liberal society.

This is terrible, my worst fear being a full timer.

Genuine question: has a vehicle fitted out with security by vanbitz ever been stolen?

A good idea (y) and something I have thought off but, if I was stealing vans, I would have fuses with me. I may still take the fuse out though but need to remember not to make the short term soulution, the long term one

I hope a solution is found to the van theft soon :(

Genuine question: has a vehicle fitted out with security by vanbitz ever been stolen?
Genuine answer: not that we know of, with a couple of caveats.
  • We have been installing alarms into Motorhomes (different to Motorhome alarms) since 1990 and could not keep, track of every system, nor know if third, fourth, fifth, sixth owners, use or maintain the alarm
  • We used to have “Nationwide Agents” that weren’t specialists so bodged things, so we dumped them have done everything in house for years, but there are ‘Strikebacks’ out there not fitted properly.

A good idea (y) and something I have thought off but, if I was stealing vans, I would have fuses with me. I may still take the fuse out though

Deliberately blow a fuse and replace it with a good one, that way it doesn’t look ‘obvious’
