More depression for the industry. Camper North East have ceased trading. I hope nobody has an outstanding deposit in there hands.

:(:( Never good..

Autotrail dealer as well, so can only assume that will have some knock on effect if they owed money to the factory, who have already been cutting staff and other dealers are discounting the stock..

Interesting stuff.

I passed by there a couple of weeks ago and the building was locked and there wasn't a van to be seen - the whole site was empty so I thought they had relocated.

That said, I have been watching a few companies recently including Tyne Valley, Catterick Caravans, Marquis Durham and Kimberley Caravans and their motorhome sales seem to have ground to a halt.

2019 will be a tough year for sure.

Marquis seem to be doing really well with the Benimars.

Interesting, Camper NE relocated maybe 6 months ago to a site close to the autopark on Sandy Lane, Gosforth (Newcastle on Tyne) and when I passed there a few weeks ago it looked quite busy.

Are you sure they've gone bust, not simply relocated and you're looking at the old site?

This might answer your question.

They had moved I saw the adverts for it a little further up north, Gateshead way I believe.

Shame - their new site was very convenient for me.

A bit worrying, both companies we have bought vans from have gone bust.:(

I suspect that they will not be the last one to go under this year. The last few years have been (baby)boom time for MH sales but with belts tightening we can expect sizeable contraction in the market

Definitely BUST. Since relocating last December things haven't gone very well.
I'm certain they've gone as I've spoken to the receivers.

I think there will be more firms going under especially ones in the luxury or leisure area of non essential spending. A lot of the boom has been people using their pension etc to fund it, but as everyone else has experienced stagnant wages I don’t think there will be the money floating about to keep up the spending.

The ones to watch out for are the dealers who recently expanded their premises or took on new branches, at the height of the boom.

In a downturn the most expensive big MHs will be hardest to sell.

As soon as a few dealers go bust, Banks get very twitchy about their lending exposure to this sector. In such situations the banks often reduce lending limits (cutting overdrafts and forcing asset sales) and make life even more difficult for any dealers who are struggling due to high borrowings and a slowdown in sales.

Yes, but it appears that Camper UK is still trading.
Pity about Camper NE. They treated us very well when we bought our van from them 7 years ago.
Not sure they are I am sure split years ago and now unconnected

We had our Geist from Camper NE some 8 years ago when they were linked to Camper UK, i believe they split about 6 years ago.

Camper NE were brilliant, superb service and always most helpful with queries. A great pity that they've stopped trading.

Thanks. It's a couple of years since we have been to a motorhome show (Lincoln 2016) and they were still connected then as we spoke to the salesman who sold us our van.

I don't know what the commercial links are/were but NE & UK are separate companies under separate ownership.
NE is/was a Ltd owned by P&P Caravan Services
UK is a privately family owned company.

The main bod at P&P seems to also have another company 'Free Spirit Leisure Vehicles' which is still 'trading'...
as is
'Geist Vehicle Leisure'

I wonder if any of those other companies have just bought a load of cheap stock and equipment ;)
Say no more - nudge - nudge.. (y)

Nearly bought a new Autotrail Tribute from them in October 2018 for delivery in Feb 2019. Good exchange price and 3 free habitation services plus a 2nd year Fiat service. Went home to think about it but then heard they were moving further north. Pleased I didn't take it up as I would have lost the free services.

and if not due for delivery next month potentially a lot more money as well

Not surprised after the rubbish after sales service we had when we bought from them.

Can I ask a basic question ... if someone had bought a van from them on finance ... would they no longer owe the outstanding balance?

Yes you would, because your finance agreement is with a separate finance company. Even if you did not have finance but for some reason still owed them money, you would still be liable as the liquidator will come after your money so they can pay off some of the money the company owes.

After my experience with Tyne Valley and Catterick Caravans you would be wise to avoid them like the plague. Marquis seem to be doing really well with the Benimars.

Funny you should mention those two companies as we had right poor dealings with both. The first dealer sold us a duff Autotrail which we subsequently sold asap just to get rid of it while the second dealer was our POC for when we were considering the purchase of a new Airstream Colorado (which incidentally is still on the forecourt after it was delivered in 2017).

I wish not to offend anyone but IMO the NE of England has some of the worst dealers in the country and if we were to lose a couple then it wouldn't be a sad loss.

Can't comment on service etc. as I haven't been in the market for a new/replacement motorhome for a long while - still perfectly happy with what I've got.

I have, however, visited most of those in the area roughly surrounding Tyne & Wear and have always been quite happy with the attention. Unfortunately people rarely post about excellent service and judging by the numbers of motorhomes sold compared to complaints there are a hell of a lot of satisfied customers around.

Just trying to give a balancing view, although I do sympathise when things go wrong.

Must apologise, it wasn't Tyne Valley but Tyneside Leisure World, part of the same company as Catterick Caravans.
