ok, guy was the cheapest quote and a cam belt specialist, sometimes you win sometimes you don't, he did change the pulleys and tensioner as well as the belt
That is a good price a mobile guy did a friends one for £180 but that was 5 years ago.

sounds like the Ford 2,2 engine which ,as said, is a chain.
Easy to check.Open bonnet look on the left hand end of the engine if it is a metal cover at top with sealant around it is a chain. If it had a cam belt the covers are always plastic

This thread has given me a wake up call, I have a July 2016 2.2 130bhp diesel Peugeot Boxer PVC , and no idea whether it has a belt or chain. It only has 17000 miles on the clock. I’ll look tomorrow at the left hand side of the engine, if struggling I’ll take a couple of photos perhaps someone can tell me what I’ll need to do next! Theres not a mention in the service book or manual about the cambelt/chain change, plenty about how to polish the paintwork!

I have been quoted £395+vat by a local garage it is a big job they reckon 6 hours all going well no broken studs etc.
Are you having the water pump changed at the same time, as so many others seem to recommend?

When you say left hand end I assume that the LH side of the MH ie near the air filter. all is metal there with pumps etc. The LH side as you look into the engine bay is more difficult to look at, but tapping it sounds like metal. When should the chain be changed?
Left hand when looking in to the bonnet. The end which will have the auxiliary drive belts/alternator/air con pump on.Right hand is the gearbox side.
Mine is in a Transit so air filter is in the middle. Try a magnet . If it sounds like metal it probably is as plastic doesn't really make a metallic sound.
The chain is meant to be 'for life' as long as the oil is changed regularly & the correct 5/30 is used.. 350>400k miles would be in order before a chain should start causing problems.

I know what you mean. I was looking to find out how to disable the movement alarm in my new Skoda for when I leave the dog in the car while I pay for my petrol and lost the will to live, so being a pragmatic and simple guy I just don't lock it.

The owner's manual covers petrol, diesel, manual, auto, ownership in a range of climatic conditions, different tyre sizes and a vast range of optional extras but fortunately there's a sticker inside the front cover with my specific engine model/type.
Look for a flush mounted switch low down near the seat belt lower mounting point or on the edge of the driver's door. Push it and it should disable interior alarm sensors. Should be in your car handbook.

The magnet was a great idea, just been out and took a couple of pics, the magnet stuck to the left hand end of the engine no problem and I cant see plastic anywhere other than the top cover thing.
I’m 99 % sure that its a chain, but if you can have a look at the phots it would help ,

Thank you gus-lopez a magnet is a brilliant why didn't I think of that idea. It confirm a metal case.

Very much false economy not to renew the water pump with the belt and tensioners. If the pump seizes or the bearing rusts and collapses, the belt will slip and do loads of damage to the engine. You can only change the pump by taking off the cam belt, so it would be exactly the same amount of labour to do either, or both jobs at the same time. The biggest expense being the labour

On the labour side, it is a long job on a normal van/coachbuilt, but you can add an hour or more for and A class with limited access. Some garages will quote silly money for a cambelt change on an A class, as they don't want the job
