Hi motorhome now 5 years old so need to get cam belt changed , managed to get a garage with a good reputation to give me a quote , gave him my registration and engine details , he reckons some types of ducatto engines cam belt kits have water pumps included and some don't , he's going to check once he has the van in, anyone else heard the same thing .

It will have the water pump driven by the cambelt so best to change it, a belt supplied in the kit would be down to the kit manufacturer noting to do with Fiat. It was the X244 2006 and earlier that didn't.

Yes. Had mine done recently. New belt, water pump, and pulley wheels.
Was advised to get everything done whether it needed doing or not.
The cost of the pump is negligible against the damage a seizing water pump can do. Even changing the pump after a new belt involves a full strip down. Gates are one of the leaders for replacement

Thanks Lenny if by any chance it wasn't driven by the cam belt would that mean it wouldn't need changing .

If not driven by the cam belt it won't wreck the engine when it seizes and easy to change. If driven by the cambelt it's lightly to wreck the engine if it seizes and to change it is almost as much work as changing the cambelt.
You said yours is only 5 years old as I said it will be driven by the cambelt.

Hi, just collected my van from the garage this afternoon. Itā€™s been in for cam belt. The garage owner is a mate and he recommended having the water pump done as the strip down to do it later is just about as big a job. Also if the water pump seizes then it can snap the cam belt and kill the engine. He wasnā€™t quite as nicely spoken as this thoughšŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚.

I have a 2014 Boxer basec Mh and would like to know the answer as well. If it helps my Boxer has a Ford engine.
Many Thanks

Boxer with a ford engine is normally chain driven camshaft.
Is that the 2.2 engine? Mines 2.3 and definitely cam belt. I seem to remember the 3.0 isnā€™t a belt .

sounds like the Ford 2,2 engine which ,as said, is a chain.
Easy to check.Open bonnet look on the left hand end of the engine if it is a metal cover at top with sealant around it is a chain. If it had a cam belt the covers are always plastic

For my m/h the belt life/change requirement is clearly mentioned in the service schedule document for the base vehicle.

Hi Spriddler

I am sure you are right, but so many of these user manuals are so generic that you need a degree to know what is actually fitted to your particular vehicle/device etc

I know what you mean. I was looking to find out how to disable the movement alarm in my new Skoda for when I leave the dog in the car while I pay for my petrol and lost the will to live, so being a pragmatic and simple guy I just don't lock it.

The owner's manual covers petrol, diesel, manual, auto, ownership in a range of climatic conditions, different tyre sizes and a vast range of optional extras but fortunately there's a sticker inside the front cover with my specific engine model/type.

Just had a quote for the cambelt and water pump renewing on my Fiat Ducato, Ā£640 because they say it's a big job
all the front end has to come off, radiator etc. Thought it was a bit steep.

You should be able to get it for a couple of hundred pounds less than that at an independent.

That was an independent, family owned garage but I don't think they are conversant with the Fiat Ducato.
They also said they needed to hire a special tool. If they are going to get Ā£640 out of me they'll need one.:giggle:

At that price they might also be needing a pair of pliers to remove the special tool! :whistle2:
I'm sure ours was around Ā£400 a year or so ago.

Even if your an is an A Class it's a couple hundred over the top.
If they think the front end and radiator has to come off they haven't a clue give them a wide birth.

I dropped ours off at 08:30ish and collected at 14:30ish so 6 hours is correct.

When you say left hand end I assume that the LH side of the MH ie near the air filter. all is metal there with pumps etc. The LH side as you look into the engine bay is more difficult to look at, but tapping it sounds like metal. When should the chain be changed?

Mine is a 2003 2.8JTD, took about 5 hrs, no water pump needed as not driven by cambelt. Cost Ā£200, I think that is fair for less than Ā£40/hr

ok, guy was the cheapest quote and a cam belt specialist, sometimes you win sometimes you don't, he did change the pulleys and tensioner as well as the belt
