Everywhere seems to be out including Calor online delivery .
Any suggestions?

Local chandlers.

Not tried this myself as we have a local calor dealer that has not suffered a shortage, but I do know someone who has used it and seems happy enough.

Not recommending or adviseing this and no I'm not thinking of doing it as I have gasit tanks anyway.
But seeing these large household gas tanks in people's gardens, just as a matter of interest, can it be tapped off into small bottles or would you need a pump or something?

I also know someone who uses this part, no hoses as it screws onto bottle.

I personally wouldn’t use it but we have gasit anyway.

I’ve seen them but not sure how it works, I’ve got 3 full 6kg bottles and since I only use gas to boil the kettle they should last for a while.

I’ve watched a friend do it , it just screws into the bottle. It’s got a gauge or something to stop it overfilling the bottle. Too risky for me but they are happy enough doing it.

Someone I know very, very well used to use a beautifully engineered adapter which enabled him to refill Calor bottles himself.

This gave him immense pleasure as ever time he refilled a bottle he was denying that dreadful Calor company any money.

Of course this caused rule obeying Funsters to get their knickers in a twist!

This person no longer lives in Blighty but can always refill (empty) Calor bottles of visiting friends... :whistle2:

You start filling calor bottles at LPG stations and you risk possibly overfilling

I don't think that is correct.

You fill an EMPTY bottle using the conversion of 1 kilo equal to 2 litres of gas.

If you are dubious about the process you should not try it!

We had our 6kg filled in Watling Street Grange near Telford. The guy filled up our Gasit bottle then he put an adaptor on our 6kg bottle and filled that up for us as well. Couldn't get a bottle anywhere near us in Dartford but as we were on our way to the Shrewsbury meet we were recommended this place.

Refilling returnable bottles without the 80% cut off is potentially very dangerous. Pressure gauges are meaningless, the pump filling pressure is up to 200psi. I wouldn’t do it and would rather not be parked anywhere near someone who has.

I discovered the main calor distributors in your area are best stocked. Garden centres, camping outlets etc are way down the foodchain for deliveries. Google caller gas bottle suppliers in your county and found the largest outlet.. they seem to be getting supplies first from Calor. Worked for me, i had to drive a bit but hey ho....

I don't agree with this post.

I would love to know the source of this scary nonsense.

No pressure gauges are involved when filling gas bottles.

If refilling bottles is so dangerous how do Calor do it?

I imagine they use special equipment and carefully calibrated amounts, having properly drained them first. I am absolutely certain they don’t risk overfilling because it would be dangerous, can stop the liquid from becoming gaseous and has the potential to damage regulators. The liquid gas not only needs room for expansion but needs sufficient surface area to vaporise.

Perhaps there are some people who have sufficient knowledge to do their own filling but I fear most people who buy this crude equipment haven’t got a clue how vital it is not to overfill the bottles.

Total in France has stopped selling LPG to motorhomes because of their concern about the dangerous practice of filling standard propane cylinders. We could end up with a similar ban that hits those with proper refillable systems as well as those using potentially dangerous methods.
This is a translation of the relevant paragraph:
“Some motorhomes have an LPG tank. Not as a fuel, but as a domestic gas. It is the LPG reserve that provides the gas for cooking, refrigerator, heating, etc. It is then an installation by an approved professional, in accordance with European standards. But it is also known that a small number of campervanists fill propane cylinders with LPG. A dangerous practice, to be avoided.”

I really, really don't want to upset you Mr Pausin but, based on your last couple of posts, I'm not convinced you are fully conversant with how the gas filling bottle process works.

There is one thing we do definitely agree on though.

If you don't know exactly what you are doing, you shouldn't even think for a nano second about trying to fill a bottle yourself.
