Calmac Ferries

Have a stand by queue but explain that locals in their cars get first dibs. If you haven't time to wait you can do a u turn and visit somewhere else. Isn't that the point of having a motorhome? Perhaps we can reduce congestion on our motorways by stopping non English from transiting our country when the motorways are congested?

I have always pre booked but I do know many who prefer flexibility

Not locals, Island Residents .

Island residents not only in cars gets first dibs they also get first dibs in there motor homes and caravans.

I'm happy to book in advance as long as the "in advance" can be at fairly short notice.

So you could park near the port (I am well aware that some are quite remote) and book your spot then explore, go for a meal or a walk or a cycle ride until it was time to check in and board. As I read the article it's the people who arrive "on spec" and hope to get on the next sailing that are the issue.

Local residents who need to have a place on the ferry should always have priority. It may be the only way they can get to medical appointments or shops.

Local residents get the priority slot by queueing in Lane 1, whilst visitors, including motorhomers, have to wait in Lane 2. Those who transgress are redirected to the appropriate Lane by local residents shouting, 'Far queue, far queue!' ...

Make sure you have a booking, turn up in time for the booked crossing and then you should not need the standby queue.
You haven't tried making a booking lately have you?

As a regular user of Calmac ferries for work I can tell you there is always space left over on bookable routes. Ardrossan -Brodick route which I use most is booked up weeks in advance and the standby option is the only option for some. It's worked fine like that for decades. What will happen now is ferries will sail with space on the cardecks and people with motorhomes/campers won't be allowed on. This makes no sense as people with large transit vans etc will still be able to use the standby option taking up just as much space as campers etc. This seems more like island residents who shout the most again just not wanting maotorhome visitors.
Calmac couldn't run a bath.

Interesting to note that Calmac define a campervan or motorhome as:
  • The vehicles V5 logbook will have the vehicle registered as a motor caravan.
Most van conversions now (including professional conversions) are classed as Van with Windows so will van with windows be allowed in the queues and will they be charged a commercial vehicle rate which used to be approx 3 x motorhome rate.
