Hi all I’m after advice I just purchased a cadac safari chief 2 .It doesn’t have gas connection ect so I’m not sure what’s best to connect I know I can connect low pressure disposable cans but not sure how long they last .My Motorhome only has room for one bottle so do people disconnect the van gas and use that or is there an adapter to that runs off one bottle to connect to cadac any advice appreciated thanks

I think most use an external gas point on their van. If you don't have one they can be retro fitted

enough to know i shouldnt touch things i know nothing about ....
is it a HP (high pressure) or LP (low pressure)

HP works of small gas cannisters

LP works with a hose and connects to a cylinder via a regulator or has been suggested (and is really useful) an external gas point, which means you dont need to worry about carrying cannisters or an additional cylinder.

its not a big job or difficult so long as you are competent to do the job ...

Since 2016 and caravanning before that
I use a camping gaz 907 cylinder. I do like the idea of an external point but I also find I do cook some distance away for safety

There are two models of the safari chef.....the HP and the LP.

The HP model which only connects to the disposable cans and the LP model which is for use with propane bottles.

You can buy a pig tail adapter for the for the LP one to make it work with disposable canisters, but you can not do it the other way round with the HP one.

Have you got a hose connector with it?

I carry the HP pigtail adapter and a 6m LP hose set up (which is what I normally would use) I didn’t fit an external bbq point but fitted a quick release fitting in the gas locker.

I only have one small 6Kg bottle in the van gas locker, but what I do sometimes is take a spare 3.9kg bottle with me on longer trips......I then use this for the cadac, but also It gives the option to connect to the van should I run out on the main 6kg bottle. (It’s never happened yet)

Hi Daz, simple job to connect to a LP bottle, ebay will provide the fittings and Gas Pipe.

Thank goodness you've got the LP one ... the ones that use the disposable canisters are IMV not very good.

Any reason why?

We (inadvertently) bought the 'canister' version and find it works very well, and particularly abroad the canisters seem to be pretty cheap. As we don't have external point it means we don't need to carry a large gas bottle and the small replacement cartridges can be stored in small holes. The only problem we have found with ours is the piezo ignition device is rubbish so we light it manually.

When we had one it was pants, took ages to cook anything, maybe they've improved the efficiency as there used to be a big difference between the HP and LP versions cooking ability.

I have the LP version with cannisters connected via the hose adapter. Creates more portability than being tied to a hose point, if I had one, on the van. Temperature for cooking is fine, usually have to keep it quite low else things will get cremated quite quickly, and it's only once it's close to running out that it gets a bit more iffy but a shake of the cannister usually solves that. The little cannisters seem to last quite well, certainly for a few BBQ uses where I can get a good 4 or 5 cremations before they run low.

If you want a BBQ point without drilling hiles in the van have a look at this.

No... that’s just your normal regulator.....

the system shown ‘T’s in after the regulator before it goes through your wall.

Since Nov 2010 after 25 yrs under canvas.
We have tried 3 cadacs , on the basis that because others think they are good we must be doing something wrong. Not once have I managed to produce a good steak on a cadac. They just don't do it. I loved my lotus grill, now dead, but replaced by an equally good cheap chinese copy from Lidl.

I have an ambition to find someone who has a cardac who can convince me they are any good.

Since 2008, with a gap between 2013 and 2018.
We have an external gas connection on our van, but I bought one of these and an extra length of pipe; so we can use it in the garden. https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwjHyYa9j4fqAhV2gFAGHTEtAckYABAGGgJkZw&sig=AOD64_1rKN03EFCm74RU35Ug42Dasn5DBA&ctype=5&q=&ved=0ahUKEwiykIK9j4fqAhUqQEEAHdEBBhEQwzwIDg&adurl=

We're on our 2nd, the 1st spontaneously combusted and melted for no apparent reason. It was replaced free of charge. I quite like it, but I get your point about cooking steaks, although the same could be said about most barbecues.
I only bought one because the van had an external gas point. For burgers, sausages, chicken drumsticks etc. they are more than adequate. For a medium rare rump steak, a pan on the cooker is much better and only about 2 metres further away.

Do you find it works Ok with a 6m hose, cadac recommend 3m max

Yeah, I’ve never had any issues or noticed any difference using a 6m hose, a 1m hose or the HP pigtail canister adapter. 👍🏼
