Hi all, I’ve applied for the C1 category to be added to my license, I got yesterday, a new photo card license back but it doesn’t say provisional on it anywhere. The only difference I can see from the old one is that this license is only valid for 2.5 years.
Have I got a provisional one?
Cheers

Edit.
I have not done the theory or practical tests yet, just the medical and filled in the forms and sent to the DVLA

The C1 licence is valid for 3 years as per dates shown in 4a and 4b.
Why would your new licence have PROVISIONAL on it ? It is a single licence which covers C1 and for driving a car.

Don’t know why it would, I assumed it would.

Might be worth viewing you details on line - it might be clearer there....

Can we get down to basics.

How old are you?
When did you pass a driving test in the UK to drive motor cars?
If the answer to the first question is <70yrs and you passed your test
before 1st Jan 1997, Can I ask why you applied for a C1 Licence.
The C1 should have been given to you as right.

On the front of the licence ,against number 9. Are the categories of vehicles you are allowed to drive.if C1 is not listed there and there is a line through the C1 category under columns 10 and 11 on the reverse, then you don't have a Category C1 licence and you therefore are not entitled to drive a vehicle over 3500 kgs.

Thanks, I’m Defo not entiltied to drive anything ove 3500 kg as I’ve not done the tests yet. I have only applied for the provisional so that I can take the tests and then drive over 3500kg.

I’m just unsure if the licenses I have been sent is the provisional one.

Did you take the medical as you are about to reach 70 if so was it your GP or someone like D4drivers? 🤔

In their wisdom, DVLA decided not to stop including provisional entitlement on the driving licence card itself. The only way to check is online.

DVLA couldn't find their arse with both hands

Very occasionally, they do get it right....

I have read (can't find) that the government were going to drop the C1 testing requirement due to the shortage of drivers, it was only a stealth tax (taking money out your pocket for no apparent reason) introduced via the EU along with having to take a test to tow a trailer/caravan over a given weight as my daughter found out with her horse trailer, it was going to cost in the region of £800 with the lessons and most of it revolved about reversing not actually pulling - it has already been dropped thankfully

So are you saying no test is required for a C1 now if you were not previously entitled.

Does this mean I don’t need to get a C1 license if we up plate the Moho?

No they haven't changed it yet.
Apologies, my question was incorrect.
If this changes, do I then have to get a C1 to drive an up plated MOHO?

It’s such a pain, I passed my test in Australia in 1992, transferred to a UK License in June 1996 but, I can’t have the grandfather rights added to my license.
Had long chats with the DVLA about this and they wouldn’t budge.
You have to have passed your test in the UK to gain the grandfather rights. I was born here.

It's bad luck.
But to be fair, you were taught to drive on the left, but also upside down.

Incorrect, dropping the automatic C1 entitlement for 1997 was to bring us in line with most of the rest of the EU. I think it was generally a good thing because there is a big difference between driving a proper 7.5t truck and a car. OK I would agree that theres not much difference between driving a 3.5t mh and 4t one but thats a different argument.

Personally I cannot understand why anyone would bother taking a C1 as a C is the same cost and opens up your options, there are plenty of Mh's just over 7.5t and they tend to be a bit of a bargain.
