Anybody know if there has been any lenience on driving license expiry as i cant get a medical due to doctors not doing them due to covid my license runs out this Jan.

Have you tried D4drivers they do medicals for driving licences.

I think the extensions have run out. My license runs out 1 March but I got the medical before Christmas and submitted the application. My reading of the rules is you can apply 3 months before but if there is less than 56 days you need a new photo and that entails a fee so I jumped into the one month slot. With hindsight it seems like I was lucky. Sorry you are having problems.

As long as you have an application submitted you can continue to drive.

I believe that you can apply on line for a std license then reapply for the c1 when you are able to get a medical.

You may be able to get chat line help on DVLA website. I doubt you will get through on the phone.
Good luck.

As far as I can remember, when I phoned DVLA this year (2020) I was told, and it was posted on here, If your licence expires from Jan 2020,(i Don't remember dates) to , I think Mid Dec., Mine expired 6th Dec, you can carry on driving for 11 mths from the expiry date of your licence, but I can apply for my licence at any time during that period. I have had the Optometrists Page on D2 done but now my g.p. is messing me about, I have to go through her cos I have a high blood pressure issue which I hope is now sorted with Meds.
I will try again to contact DVLA Doctors after Holidays to check, but that is what they told me about 3 months ago.
Bruce.

My understanding is something similar. My licence expired in November, but I believe I've got up to 11 months to renew it.

I had an online chat with DVLA as their web site still stated that you could renew without a D4, I was told that as my licence renewed in January I needed a D4. So I was fortunate to get into my doctors with my wife as we are both on annual C renewal. Posted just before Christmas and back this week... amazing!

Licenses that expire from 01/01/2021 have to be renewed as normal. As chasthedagger said his expires in January it appears that he needs to make a full D2/D4 application. Some of us have missed out on the extension.

From the DVLA website:

It’s all on the DVLA website I have 11 months grace👍🏼👍🏼😀
And now for the bad news>>>> YOU ARE STILL DRIVING ON SECT. 88 OF UK ROAD TRAFFIC ACT. YOU CAN'T DRIVE ABROAD. which is why I am keen to get my application in now. Although the way things are at the mo. it looks like Covid wise we are not going to France or Spain til' sometime in the summer. Becha, Becha, Becha!

Mine expired on 11/11/20 👍🏼

I have been trying to sort out my licence, I did call a few weeks back and if I didn't hang up I suspect I would still be on hold now. I decided to write in but no reply as yet. I am guessing they have staffing issues due to Covid?

Do the DVLA usually have a good reputation for resolutions? Is this an exceptional period??

Anything that is online and semi automated is usually quite quick anything that requires human intervention is pants...
Each time there is a delay it is picked up by a new operator and they often apply different standards.

It's a bit like taking the car for a mot and each time you take it back havi g fixed the previous point the new tester comes up with a new point.

The Government web site is still saying because of COVID you do not need to submit a D4 (medical report)but you will be given a 1 year licence on application if your licence is due to expire after today.
