Doctors appointment one thing but rushing the DVLA is another matter entirely, find a nice spot to hole up for several weeks

Have you tried phoning around other surgeries because you're paying for it? I couldn't get in with my doc some years ago but I asked the other receptionists about an appointment for a medical and got one same day.

The doctor does as most doctors do unless it is required that you have a full eye test at an optician but I've never had that imposed and not heard of it being imposed except when there was a panic in 97 regarding eye sights for drivers but it sorted itself out

Once you have applied to the DVLA you can carry on driving as normal as long as you aren't aware of any medical reason why you should not. You don't have to await their response.

But the C1 entitlement expires on your 70th birthday meaning you are unlicensed.
It may be refused which means you had no licence since your 70th.

The eyesight requirements for the D4 medical changed a few years ago and not all doctors are qualified to do the more stringent test, hence why many have to have a separate test at an optician.

My application for C1 entitlement was delayed. On reaching my 70th, I phoned the DVLA, and after looking at my case notes, they confirmed I could legally drive a vehicle requiring a C1 licence. So best to check if the application is delayed and record the name of the person you spoke to.

As I understand it if you need glasses to read the eye test they have hanging on the wall, you must have a full eye test by a qualified person.

The bottom of this link tells you about driving while waiting for the dvla to sort out your licence.

Ah, OK. Usually it's part of my 5 year medical for my HGV and D licence. Although I have a c1 and c1e entitlement, I suppose the C and E and D and E sort of trumps em.

The last 2 medicals for C+E that I had included the stricter eyesight test but my doctor was qualified, I assume that the same D4 and the same requirements are needed for the C1 entitlement at 70.

I have not renewed the C+E again as I would now need to do it annually(strange feeling after 45 years!!) and I do not use it now, I will not bother with the medical at 70 either as both can be reinstated at any time by passing the medical.

The eye test is included with the docs on wheels.
The eye test the last time at my local doctors consisted of reading a test card in the outside passage,
I am going for an eye test next week at Specsavers and I understand that they will complete the eye test part of the D4 for free!!!!

To be fair, I might renew my license next year as it's due in January and I reach (possibly) 65 in March. It's a long story but basically because I renewed and had medicals in good time, they dated it from the medicals, not my birthday plus one time they wanted me to have 2 medicals to cover both vocational licences! Why? Well they're due a week after each other. Yes but i will have the same doctor doing the medical on the same day at the same time so form will be identical for C entitlement and D entitlement. Penny dropped. Just do one medical. Doh!!!!!

Just a thought. The medicals are aligned to the current retirement age so those coming up behind us are not going to retire until they are 66 then 67 and eventually 68 and so on. Somebody's got to finance our pots as we did our elders. I wonder how much pressure they larger companies will put on government to increase the period of medicals over 65 because, I appreciate that the companies cannot force one to retire at 65 at present but eventually they'll have to employ them till what will be the extended age. However, that depends on how many companies pay for the medicals and I understand it's getting less and less.

not many i would say even today pay for the medicals.
some do as it can be a tax loss and a nice way of cheaply thanking the driver.

Been spoilt I suppose as 2 previous companies paid for medicals, ADR and eye sight test and prescription safety glasses.
Don't really think many companies thank a driver no matter how cheap.
I saw a very apt sign on the back of a truck

Been doing some googling and this is what I have found from: http://www.driversmedicals.com/_FAQs.html#cl

What if I need glasses or contact lenses to pass the eyesight test?

DVLA changed the rules in 2013 so that, so long as your vision with glasses is okay, you don't have to pass any particular test without your glasses or contact lenses. However, for no reason that we can see, DVLA still insist that the doctor tests your eyesight without your glasses or contact lenses. It doesn't matter what the result says, but if the measurement isn't done, DVLA will send the form back to you. Strange, we know - but there it is!

If you are coming for a taxi medical you don't need to have your eyes tested without your glasses, so long as your vision is okay with your glasses on.

You can download a sample eye test, and it states on them that your best eye must be able to read to the bottom line, and the top line with the worst. that's with or without glasses, but the glasses mustn't be more than +8 dioptres which are apparently very thick glasses.

So it seems I was wrong to say you need to see an optician, going to ring them tomorrow as my renewal is due in September.

There still seems to be confusion amongst older drivers about the test.
HGV/minibus drivers have more stringent tests that start earlier. Those of us just wanting to continue driving a Moho over 3.5T after 70 just have to take a modest medical and eye test, (with your glasses on), fill in the form and send it off. The form is sent to you automatically about two months before your birthday. My medical and eye test lasted 20 mins and cost £54 at a specialist hgv/taxi doctor.
The new licence runs from when the completed form is accepted, not your birthday, and once it is at the Licencing office you can drive over 3.5T. It lasts 3 years.
If you have an existing medical condition it is more complex.

In total agreement. Occasionally things that are simple end up being bogged down in seemingly helpful replies but yours is the best answer rather than getting too deep into professional driving standards.

Had the HGV medical today, pretty simple, you have to read the bottom line with one eye and at least the top line with the other on the eye test card, with or without glasses. Next a simple peripheral vision test, and thats it as far as your eyes go.
The rest of it is a long list of questions, which as this wasn't being done by my doctor, you could in theory lie your head off. They can consult your doctor, but I doubt they do. Blood pressure test, and your done. No urine test needed. Appointment at 11.30, out by 11.45.

Just hope you haven't a severe medical condition as listed in the DVLA guide. 'mobile' Doctors will then require your full medical records which they have to acquire from your own Doctor, more delay....our Doctor charged £41.00.very reasonable by today's standards however in my case I still lost must C1 category...bitter pill to swallow
