I am a newbie
As we will be living in Spain from next year, we are thinking it may be easier to buy a motorhome in Spain, to save having to return to the UK for the MOT at a set time. We need to sell our RV first, or see if it can be taken in part exchange but has anyone bought a motorhome in Spain and has any advice on the best way to do it? Would appreciate some comments :)

Are you going to tour while out in Spain...? If you going to stay on a particular site most of the time would a caravan do..?

edit: sorry, just re-read your post.... I don’t believe you can own a GB motor while resident in Spain .....

Jenmelmar, that seems a sensible approach in that your buying a motorhome in the country in which you reside. Simplifies the MOT issues and the same van but LHD which should also make life easier

Agree with post above from Badknee. Contact one of us living in Spain, many changes coming since 1st February....might be worth stating if you intend living in your motorhome or in something static.

Hi Jennifer, as you say living in Spain from next year, my advise is get your residency and licence changed as soon as possible, because next year after the transition period ends, it will be more difficult, and you will need more money and have to take the Spanish driving test. ?
If you have owned a vehicle for more than 6 months, you can bring it into Spain as personal belongings tax free, vehicles are more expensive here, insurance is more road tax is less in our area, but variable depending where you live. ?
We purchased our motorhome in Germany and imported it into Spain, it gave us more choice and worked our cheaper than buying here. ? Bob.

We've bought two motorhomes in Spain. One from a dealer and the other a private sale. It's much easier buying from a dealer because they do all the paperwork for you, but it's not too dissimilar buying private because you pay a Gestoria to do all the paperwork. Just be aware of the transfer tax on top of the purchase price.

Not sure where in Spain you are going to be, but a quick shout out for Hispavan, at Antas, Vera, Almeria - located right next to a junction on the A7/AP7 motorways.

A friendly and helpful dealer that provides good service and has a wide choice of new and used vans on offer. Not entirely sure about ownership of the business, but there is a mix of British and English-speaking Spanish running the outfit.

I have no interest in the firm other than as a satisfied customer who was helped out with emergency repairs at a very reasonable price. And I know of plenty of others that have been helped by the company. No experience of buying a van from them, however, but would have every confidence if I was in the market for one.

Thanks so much for your helpful replies. We have been to hispavan at Vera, and they were very helpful. They said they would take the RV in part ex but they have a dealer in UK who would come and collect it and give a price-but obvioulsy a lot less than we hope to get for it. So very tricky. We have some serious thinking to do. The motorhome would be our home as we have sold our house in UK and are just touring around at the moment-so not static for more than a month at a time. We need to decide exactly what we are going to do and then make a plan! Will ask more questions later when we know what we are doing! Many thanks :)

An address is going to be the most important thing for you to have to get residencia. The other factors then are sufficient income to satisfy the particular person dealing with your application (differs from place to place) paid into a Spanish bank account and next year it will be even more difficult (higher funds required). Health cover. At the moment it needs to be via the S1 from the UK (for over retirement age and dependents) (possibly will stop for new applicants after Dec 31) or private health cover, which won't cover any existing conditions.

And, as has already been mentioned, you'll need to change your driving licence and after the end of the year, that will mean taking a Spanish test.

These are all the things that are known about at the moment. They MAY change depending on what deals are agreed, but freedom of movement will probably have fallen off the bottom of the UK's list. That's the thing that most people wanted stopped and, unfortunately, it goes both ways.

If you REALLY want to try to live in Spain, you need to try before the end of THIS year.

That is a great link-thanks so much-we have an address we can give but do not have a Spainish bank account yet so that seems to be the first thing to do on our list. Rather a lot to sort out at once with changing the RV-but we will get organised on moving forward. Thanks so much for all your help :)

We bought from Hispavan as well and have had absolutely superb service from them. Based on our experience I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending them. We had 3 problems in the first year - the TV had a bad signal so they replaced the amp and leads, the water pump failed so they replaced that and the fly screen frame came loose on the hab door. They got a whole new one from Dethleffs ready to fit just in case, but as suspected it was just a couple of fixings that had missed an internal baten so was easily fixed. Highly recommended.
