Looking for advice / ideas please

We currently live in Portugal and are looking to buy a secondhand motorhome. We have had both caravan and motorhome before.
The choice here seems very poor compared to either the UK or the rest of Europe

Has anyone successfully bought a motorhome from elsewhere in Europe and if so what were your experiences. What did you do about registration and insurance?

I understand I will have to pay duty here, but costs elsewhere in Europe seem cheaper than the UK and it will save the hassle of swapping headlights etc.

Thanks in advance

Hi, yes we live in Spain and the choice is very limited expensive and high mileage, so we purchased our motorhome in germany.
As you say nothing to do to it, we paid a gestor ( legal person ) to deal with it, I think her cost were €130 (y)

Flew to germany, sent photo of all the paperwork she said Ok and booked the ITV station paid import tax all done in 4 weeks but we caught a holiday so would have been quicker. (y) Bob.

If you are buying second hand there shouldn't be any duty to pay.

Not long enough, but a little common sense helps..........
In Spain there will be an import tax and no way of getting out of it. They work it out on the value of the vehicle in Spain. It can range from 90 euro's up to thousands of euro's. As bobandjanie state using a "gestor" is the best way to do it.

In Portugal and it seems Spain is the same, tax has to be paid to import a vehicle, even though the Eu courts have said it is illegal for the government to impose these taxes, they continue to charge them !

You have to love the Spanish they totally embraced the European Union and took every possible opportunity to get money from it transforming what was and possibly still is a third world country into one with fantastic infrastructure, they then ignored pretty much every rule ever made by the EU and are one of the most corrupt countries in Europe. There is no requirement to pay tax when importing within 30 days of registering as s resident or signing on the electoral roll. Comes under "good's & chattels".
Any other time and an import tax based on value is the same for private importers as for dealers.

But that goes against everything the EU is supposed to stand for as it's allegedly a single market therefore the original purchaser paid Vat when the vehicle was first purchased.

Every year Brussels fines Spain for this. The government basically says how much is the fine? 2 million euros. How much tax did we take? 2.5 Mil. Pay the fine. Next.
