Probably similarly to other MH’s my engine battery (Fiat Ducato) sits in the floor on the passenger side of the vehicle. The battery has this large terminal block mounted on top which looks a bit daunting. To replace it like for like I’m assuming that once the battery has been replaced the vehicles software will have to be reset etc?

I need to know this before I try and get the battery replaced, if I have the same experiences as last winter, and decide who is going to replace it for me (Halfords mobile service etc) when necessary. It could probably be done on my driveway at home. Does this company have to be a Burstner or MH agent?

Many thanks.

It’s an easy 5 minute job at home.

The block just lifts off after unscrewing the red plastic thing and the terminal.

No software reset is needed.

Depending on age (of MH definitely Refers to x290) Are there any specific tasks required like letting ECU go to sleep (disconnect bat +ve with ign off and doors closed) or waiting 15 mins before replacing terminals to protect airbag ECU.

I knew i had something on this saved from somewhere.
from Fiat Forum 2nd part is extracted from Peugeot info.
If you have solar panels and a regulator such as the Votronic series, or other facility that has a connection between the leisure and vehicle battery systems, I would recommend covering the panels and disconnecting them from the regulator, plus removing the main leisure battery fuse before disconnecting the leisure battery as well, the restore the connections in the reverse order.

Where the instructions state to wait 3 minutes after closing doors etc, I recommend 10 minutes if the ignition has been on within the previous 10 minutes, to allow the system to go into "sleep" mode.

Note that this procedure on a Ducato or similar van with the battery inside the cabin, requires you to be inside the van with all the doors shut etc. as per the instructions before disconnecting or reconnecting the battery, so do the preparatory work such as removing the floor covering and battery tray cover first, then get inside the vehicle, shut all the doors etc. and after waiting the requisite time, disconnect the battery. The negative terminal often has a clip type clamp, rather than a bolt. which makes things easier.

Once the battery has been disconnected, wait at least 5 minutes before reconnecting it.

BSI (Body System Interface) Reboot Procedure

PROCEDURE FOR BATTERY DISCONNECTION

Whenever a vehicle battery has to be disconnected, switch off all equipment, interior lights etc, close the doors leaving the driver’s window open.

Switch off the ignition and remove the key and any diagnostic equipment.

Wait a full 3 minutes before disconnecting the battery.

The BSi must be allowed to go to SLEEP i.e. into "active economy mode". Do not operate any equipment on the vehicle during this time. Remember, even opening the bonnet will wake the BSi on a vehicle fitted with alarm.

If the battery is under the bonnet, open the bonnet first and leave it up.

ALWAYS disconnect any diagnostic equipment and do not operate any other vehicles in the vicinity during the 3 minute waiting period.

PROCEDURE FOR BATTERY RECONNECTION

Unless otherwise instructed by Peugeot or Product Service, you must always carry out the following procedure, often referred to as a "soft re-boot", to minimize the possibility of the BSi corrupting its own software when reconnecting the vehicles battery supply.

Ensure the procedure for battery disconnection has been adhered to and importantly all BSi functions were switched off with the driver’s window left down.

1 Close all doors
2 Remove ignition key if left in ignition
3 Reconnect battery. DO NOT open any doors
4 Wait 10 seconds
5 Switch on headlights through the driver’s window
6 Switch on ignition then start the vehicle and check system functions

When Toping up di water i had to remove battery fittings but added a second battery to the jump start points to maintain voltage to system whilst battery disconnected (as suggested here.)

Don’t forget you may need a radio code when changing your battery.

I noticed a professional battery fitter doing this some time ago. He only used a small 7ah 12v Alarm type battery but it maintained the voltage and saved a lot of potential hassle with his clients vehicle if, say , the radio stopped working- or worse

If there's any doubt about upsetting any vehicle electronics/software I temporarily connect another battery with croc clips when changing a battery which ensures that there's a continuous 12v supply.

Thank you all for your replies. Googlebot ... I think that you need to look at. the1andonly’s reply above. Bit of difference here!!!!!!

Has anyone used a company, either national or local to replace their battery please?

I did read all the posts, I changed mine last week and it took me 5 minutes. I just used a jump pack to connect to the jump start points under the bonnet.

I then carefully removed the terminals and placed the live in a thick plastic bag, unscrewed the battery and put the new one in.

I forgot to mention the jump lead bit, so apologies.

The problem with the ecu low voltage problem there is no definitive problem ie some ecu's are more resiliant than others and could survive many disconnections (or 1) without a problem. Some people have had more than one failure, so could be a system failure not just a specific module.

Many thanks Googlebot. Apologies not needed but appreciated.

We have a Battery Master connected between our leisure and starter batteries. If I change the starter motor on a sunny day will the supply from the BM keep the electronics "active" (assuming starter battery had low voltage)? They are both chassis earthed.
