We have been going through the Mother in Laws possessions trying to work out what had been stolen and what not, we found a watch that we decided was more than 45 years old and most likely sat with a flat battery for 20 years so thought what chance that it still goes, so spent £25 and had a battery put into it and a more modern Seiko titanium (20 year old) and what do you know they both struck up straight away and are keeping time, now just need to get the Jungens radio controlled one going.

They don't make em like they used to.

I love watches.

I haven’t got any really valuable ones but I have got all my old late relatives watches. I keep them in a box under the bed.

I had the Casio "data bank" many moons ago, since then I have gone mechanical.

And you are going to tell me they are not a Quartz at all, they run on a tuning fork design running from two small coils powered by the battery, but you knew that and more I am sure, I'm just reading I think this is a 218 day date.

There is a significant difference between quartz & electric watches ...

If you need to know about, get a battery for, or have a repair done on an electric watch you'd be hard pressed to find anyone more knowledgable than Paul [Silver Hawk] at http://electric-watches.co.uk/

I was asked to stop wearing my Bulova watch in school because the hum from the tuning fork was amplified by the desk top each time I put my hand on it!

This is the watch,

I can't find anything the same on the internet as this one has the slightly oval/square face, and the tuning fork is above the name.

The case number starts 5 which suggests 1975.

We also found this Jungens radio controlled which is not as old but the local battery people refused to look at and it might need a service which put BIL off at £300.

I have one from the 60's ,single tuning fork.model
When going and all is quiet at night, you can hear it humming away in the drawer .
One of those sounds that the more you become aware of it , it seems to get louder .
not renowned for keeping good time though.

Mrs CC bought me a nice watch for my 50th when we were on holiday wore it for a couple of week then took it off as I was working in the garden for a week..
Went to put it back on and the watch had stopped, went off the head cursing and saying she had bought a duff one, turned out if had had have read the instructions it has a self winder!
Doh!!

1975 normally has N5 stamped separate to the serial number.
If the second hand sweeps with no hesitation then it is a tuning fork model, if the second hand jerks it's likely a later quartz model.
With it being a date/date and the winder at 45 degrees it looks as though it will have a 2182 movement in it

Hi and thanks

Yes it’s a sweep, wouldn’t the quartz regulated be an accuquartz? I read somewhere that 1975 only had the 5 and series number as it was an anniversary, can’t see any letters whatever.

I have an old Bulover accutron with 14 k case and original crock skin strap. The case is an odd shape and uncomfortable to wear. I never wore it much and it got put in a drawer and was forgotten for years. I found it several years ago and took it to the local watch repairers for service and a new battery. He said he could do nothing with it and it needed a Bulover agent. Bucks in Hanley were agents at the time and I duly took it there. They said it would have to go back to Bulover and it would be back in around 6 weeks. OK, says me and they phoned about 8 weeks later. Shock, horror, £165 and that must be 15 or 20 years ago now. I never did like the thing, and have no idea why I bought it in the first place. If I remember right, Bulover were big advertisers on radio Luxembourg back in the day.

Yup, they were, I remember as a kid I had a big old valve radio in my bedroom and I would plug in a set of headphones when I was supposed to be asleep and listen to "Wonderful 208" fading in and out listening to the likes of David "Kid" Jensen and Emperor Rosko until I fell asleep in the early hours.
