No the size of the chain ring is only one part of the equation
The wheel size and the internal hub gears along with the two rear cassette rings all play a part to create the correct number of evenly spaced gears in inches comparable to any other road bike
Massive jumps in the three speed hub so you have to juggle with the two speed derailleur gear to split the difference, but I am sure you knew that already.

Dont like to disappoint but it is the condition of your legs and your general fitness that is the deciding factor in cycling. These overpriced gadgets are just that. Unless you are a commuter who likes to sit in the window seat of Costa drinking overpriced shots or want to carry your transport in a holdall then their are a plethora of proper bikes out there for that sort of money that will make your cycling far more enjoyable.

A bike needs to be there before you can ride it which is I guess why a lot of people and especially motorhomers are interested in bikes that fold into a small space when not being ridden.

But on your point about it being about your legs and physical condition you are right, but a better bike will always be more efficient.

Exactly what I said funfair there are much better bikes out there for that sort of money. The only thing to be said about a bright colored Brompton is they saw you coming.:)

@Techno Good man !

We have had Bromptons since 2006 (bought in Jersey for our Yacht). They are fantastic and we would not be without them! (we also have Specialised Crosstrails).

Ours are only 3 speed 'cooking' versions but still great to ride. Brill for short jaunts of 10 miles, good for 25 miles and a little tiring after 50 miles down a gravel track in Spain :D

They are well made, fast folding and handle well. Take em everywhere, fold up and stick em under the table whilst in the pub :)

Or just ride somewhere and come back on the bus or train :)

A man like you Techno will appreciate the quality and engineering (y)

The only people to 'knock' Bromptons are those that have never ridden them (or owned one)

The weight is not important but Mine is lighter than that, all depends on the equipment fitted or not.
... have you ridden one like it Andy? Just wondering as I've never ridden a Brompton.

I think Brompton's are like Apple products..

Hard to justify the cost, but nothing else compares .. they are superbly engineered, and there is a joy in just owning one..

Jan and I took a test ride with a view to ordering.. in the end decided as we had plenty of space for 'normal' sized bikes it would be a 'want' rather than a 'need' ..

Hi Andy,

We've had 2 M6R's for about 8 years now, I've got a silver one and Judy has a girlie bright yellow one.

They certainly ain't cheap but the build quailty is superb and no other bike folds as easy or as compact as a Brommy.

They are always in the van and we wouldn't be without them and are always a talking point wherever you go, especially abroad.
We even had Japanese tourists insisting on a fold/unfold demo madly taking loads of photo's of them in Annecy.

I doubt we'll ever sell ours.

Might be worth investing in an Abus Bordo lock which stores on the frame without interfering with the fold even if you have an anti flip device fitted...

Recently sold my P3, even at 10 years old, it looked and performed as new. Great thing about the older Bromptons us that you can fit almost all newer parts and upgrades to keep them up to date.
I kept it under one of the side sofas in our Autosleeper, no other fold up bike would fit.
I only sold it because our latest van has a towbar mounted bike rack that wil carry both our e bikes.

This looks good, we have 2 Bromptons but our insurance said we must have a heavy D lock and must be secured through the triangle of the frame as shown in your photo. (Anywhere else and the bike can be folded/taken apart to remove the lock).

Ours have had electric conversions fitted and find we find it difficult to secure the bag and battery. It is a trade off between ease of use (so that you always do it) and security.

Someone earlier asked about battery life. We were really surprised at how many rides we can do between charges. Obviously depends on how much help you want individually up the hills etc but we were told 40 miles on average. Using EHC every few days anyway, we were able to charge about once a week and never ran out of charge on the batteries. They ride as normal bikes when the battery not fitted which is useful for short around the campsite trips.

We chose Bromptons as we can put them under rear sofa in our Ducato PVC, we were up to weight on van and so tow bar bike rack for 2 full size electric bikes not an option.

Andy, yours looks the business! Hope you enjoy
