Home after picking up our new Carthago and a 400 mile round trip to have an alarm fitted and when washing the road grime off the van I found that we have a smashed headlamp.
It is one of the 90mm Hella lamps and the front glass is shattered.
Does any one know if these lamps have been subject to problems like the Hymer headlamps that seemed to disintegrate on their own?
The glass seems pretty thick and it seems hard to believe that a small stone would break it without showing some signs on the surrounding bodywork.

A peed off Richard.

Sounds like it took a real whack.
they are projector headlamps and the lens is like a magnifying glass....thinish round the edge and getting thicker towards the centre.
i guess a stone could crack it if it hit in the wrong place.

sorry can't help .. just commiserate, that is a real bummer..

Sorry , hope it doesnt take the shine off getting your MH, hopefully you can get a replacement without too much expense.

They are standard projector Hella lamps about 60 quid on eBay. There will be a part number on the back of the unit.

The same lamps are used in Hymer's, it is the outer lens in the Almond eye units that crack not the lamp.

Are plastic "protectors" available, similar to ones you can get for cars?

Well at least they are not the £1000+ ones that hymer likes to charge for !:D
I brought two main beam ones for £80 last year as one of mine wasn't focusing properly, still not too expensive in comparison to some,

Thanks for that Lenny. Tales of huge costs for Hymer lights had me worried...you have put my mind at rest.

Thanks to all the other contributors for your thoughts and sympathy. The last thing any of us want to do is find damage on our brand new shiny MH.

Richard.

In case yours are the same as the late 90s-2005 Hymers with twin headlights, I understand these to be the specs. In the case below, the outer lamps are the dipped beam units and the inners are the main beam.
I have not checked these specs. myself.

Clear DE projector Headlight (outer lamp):
Hella PN: 1BL 006 349-011
VW PN: 1H0 052 167 A (Golf MK3)
EAN 4082300048506
Trade Numbers E1 7415

Clear Spotlight (inner lamp):
Hella PN: 1K2 006 147-051
VW PN: 1H0 052 167 B (Golf MK3)
EAN 4082300048919
Trade Numbers E1 34447

Thanks for that info JeanLuc. I will ring the dealers after the weekend and check the part numbers then get a local company to fit the replacement. Our dealers are a four hour drive away.

Richard.

None for any A Class that I'm awere off, for the Hymer Almond eyes one of the guys in the Hmer club used to make but doesn't any more, I made my own.
It may seem a naive question but the cost of things like headlight replacements or windscreens may direct me away from an A Class rather than Coachbuilt or PVC.
A grand for a headlamp lens, versus sixty for a coach built ???
Playing field might be more level with a protector...

In the overall cost of ownership not that much just means if a grands worth of headlamp gets broken it's an insurance claim. Windscreen is covered by insurance so what's the problem.

its only money. enjoy your motorhome.

I have the same type of headlamp on my Rapido. My dip beam one was cracked with a stone chip but I bought a new replacement on Ebay for £48 ish. I imagine they are still available.
