We're travelling in the opposite direction, we left Brittany this morning and are now in Normandy. :)

There are loads of free aires in Brittany - though you may have to pay for water in some.

I have been caravanning for 32 years but in 2014 I have"gone over to the dark side"
Surely someone using legally dedicated Aires cannot really be classed as a FLT ??

Just saying

Possibly not official Flt , but must admit to liking rural & free more than paid ones in larger towns , as don't use restaurants etc.
Cite europe last night 31 moho's 3 funsters
1 funster let early this morn , who had left his waste tap open ,soapy water all over car park , yuk!!!

Personally I dont mind paying if its where I want to be

here s a free one and a paid one from last month.Tthe bottom two are a free one, 15 minutes from Bordeaux where we had spent the day (parked in an authorised car park and paid), had lunch bit of retail etc then wanted somewhere convenient for the evening and night, knowing we were leaving next morning.

The top one is a paid one 12.50 per night, right next to beach, little town and bridge with cyclepath onto Noirmoutier.

Horses for courses IMHO but TBH I really cant be doing with the pfaff of the average campsite, if they were the only option I would probably give up and buy a boat..

Hope you have a great time in Britanny,

Nice free aire on the green between the church and the Seine
No services , weather very good sunny with lots of clouds quite warm
Aire with no services ? Doesn’t quite go together . The term aire is short for aire de service meaning a place where you can empty etc and may be allowed to stop the night . Did you find in the official French book or a British where to park free ?

Actually aire means area, so aire de service means a service area, stationment = parkings. Aire de camping car is the best one but avoid aire des gens de passage.

Aire does indeed mean area but as we were discussing it reference to camping cars then I was questioning if it was an official camping car aire from the French book or a British made up one ( book I mean )

Unusual for me , we stayed a second night as weather very good , sunny all day but now just clouded over , move on tomorrow.
Lake/pond nearly dried out , last time here lake was up to the top , now down by at least 8 feet and no more than 18 inches left in patches.
Will head towards Fougeres or there abouts , been to Fougeres a couple of time busy aire right by the castle , Castle well worth a visit but not for us this time.
7 moho's here 5 french , 2 Dutch and us , Dutch very friendly ,one couple we met 2 nights a go at Vieux Port , they said after we left the incoming spring tide came into the green grass parking area , up to half the length of there moho just up an inch on rear tyres ,no probs , they just moved to a bit higher up the field , French just good morning , bonjour or a nod , that's ok with me as I can't speak hardly any french.

Why the obsession with free aires and not choosing places you have researched and would like to visit ?

Very rarely research anywhere we go, just relying on what we already know from past reading or tv and think I'd like to have a look at that other than that we just wander about then everywhere is a pleasant, or otherwise surprise, if we don't like it move on, not tied to somewhere that is different than we thought.

I agree that you often come across a great place by accident but wandering aimlessly with the sole purpose of looking for free aires seems very odd to me but everyone to their own :)

No that's wrong road about, you get to somewhere you like then look for an site nearby, we don't research aires anymore than we do where we are going, if it happens to be a pay one then so be it

Agree with chaser , we don't only do free , actually tomorrow is a pay one at tinteniac on a nice canal and nice town.we wander from village to village checking out what places that I have research from computer at home before coming over but have a plan of what we want to see and do & of only interest to us , I only mention the aires for the benefit of others who may be interested in traveling this area.
As you each to his own

We are on a campsite for a few days, as it fits the bill, not our usual scene ,and now I know why we dont, it's a nice enough site as it goes, everything a camp can be in fact but it ain't like being with a couple of others in the countryside, here no matter which way you look there is someone watching you all hemmed in, got to be seen to be doing everythi by by the book but a couple of nights won't hurt us:whistle::(

Moved on to Tinteniac aire 4 euro's , beside a canal . Bright sunny and breezey start after a very chilly night.
Only one place left when we arrived, that made 3 brits all be it one couple were from southern Ireland, the other 8 all french, , several house boats moored opposite the aire , a few fisher men a long the bank , one with 5 rods out.
The aire only about 100 yds from the canal lock and its just past an old museum of old farm & engineering equipment.

We don't mind paying for an Aire but free ones are a nice bonus a nice wild spot even better. Do avoid sites unless it they are a last resort and only place to stay where we want to visit, just don't like them.
