My wife was doing some booking research and a “ new “ pop up appeared on the booking page re fitness to travel certificate needed , on further delving it appears that conditions such as hypertension were included .
Is this new ? Cheers .

Never heard of that and we use BF regularly.

Booking a trip by ferry, tunnel or air?

The fit to travel form is intended to ensure that the health of the passenger is compatible with a journey on board Brittany Ferries ships. Any passenger with a health issue and/or a disability or reduced mobility, even temporary, is required to inform us at least 48 hours before departure

I believe that the “ compatibility “ conditions are surprisingly v extensive and encompassing.
I’ve no truck with complying just haven’t come across it before .

Booked last week 12/01/23 and there was no form mentioned during booking.

Just done a dummy booking and it’s there. Can’t get an appointment with a doctor when you are ill, let alone to get them to fill in a form.

We booked yesterday - for the summer - and this was not a question!

Do they specify the qualifying 'health issues'?

I notice you haven't entered your passport's country of issue so maybe that triggers the health issues message for certain countries

Do they specify the qualifying 'health issues'?
Fit to Travel form will be requested:

  • If you have been hospitalised in the last two months
  • If you have a chronic medical or psychiatric condition. “Chronic conditions" refer to long-term diseases that evolve over time (diabetes, heart diseases (infarction, angina, etc.), lung diseases (asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), etc.), kidney disease, cancer, stroke, high blood pressure, polyarthritis, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease, nervous breakdown, etc.).
  • If you require oxygen for any reason
  • If you have been diagnosed with an infectious disease (chickenpox, measles, mumps, rubella, viral gastroenteritis, meningitis…)
If you are unable to present the fit to travel form, you will not be allowed to travel.

My original post # 12 amended to add a ref to passport country of issue.

There goes most of their clientele on the trips ive been on its mainly retirees.

A couple of trips in the past we probably wouldn’t have been allowed on, definitely not at the moment.🤷‍♂️

So is taking tablets to reduce high blood pressure or taking statins to reduce cholesterol classed as 'chronic deseases'?

We all have a chronic desease. It's called ageing!

The health declaration is never requested for the Newhaven - Dieppe ferry when I book by phone and tell them I'm over 60. Maybe because it's only a 4 hour crossing.
I've used Brittany Ferries once, with my two sons and our motorbikes. An hour out of Santander the ferry turned back due to a 'medical emergency'. Many people watched from the decks as the medical emergency walked to the ambulance on the quay.
The delay suited us fine as we like being at sea.

We too booked with BF last Wednesday and weren't asked to fill out a form. That'll be the end of Brittany Ferries. Most people we know (old and young) seem to suffer from something.

It seems you have to declare the conditions and then they decide whether you need to fill in the form and send it to you. Once that has been triggered you can’t board without having submitted the form. I guess a lot will not declare any conditions. One would also hope that if your condition is controlled you wouldn’t need to complete the form. And I just can’t see doctors being very willing to complete these. They will be at the bottom of their file tray.

I can't see anyone filling these things in nevermind what they have got, why would you pay a doctor to say something that is going to stop you going.

A way for BF to claim for loses against you should you get ill onboard? Haven’t read the same print, but I’m wondering if it’s in there somewhere.🤷‍♂️

Anyway, just another reason to use other companies.👍

Good point and just what I was thinking. I wonder if the other ferry companies are doing this too.

Is it possibly due to the amount of passengers having to be helicoptered off the boat or the boat having to divert to unload passengers taken ill?

Those with health issues already pay extra for their personal travel insurance so maybe it would cover any charge made by a ferry company?

Ah! but, Ah! but Ah! but,

It is not mandatory to have travel Insurance to board a ferry.

It is, however, compulsory to have sufficient Insurance to board a cruise ship.

Maybe BF are listening to their own publicity in describing their ferry to Spain as a cruise?

Doubt if many travel policies cover diverting a ferry, and if you haven’t told BF or your Travel Insurance Company of any existing conditions, you’re not covered away.🤷‍♂️

The Devil will be in the small print.🤔
