Can you tell me if it matters when you book the ferry ?

I am looking to book next years ferry to St Malo but am not sure how the BF membership discount works. Does the discount allowance work at the time of booking or at the time of travel ?

I know the membership is only a year at a time so not sure if i need to wait.

Haven't joined yet, (trying to work out if its a good idea or not) hence the question
