sailing with Brittany ferries for first time tomorrow evening 11 pm, portsmouth/Bilbao, does anyone have any advice on what time to arrive Portsmouth, is there Anywhere to park up, any advice from funsters who have made the crossing will be very appreciated.

Give yourself AT LEAST!!! 90 Mins for the extra work they have to do checking docs.

Enjoy yourselves you lucky people!!

Ahhh…that feeling of ‘going somewhere’, the smell of the ferry when loading, the grimace and scowls from the loading staff in the hull, that flurry of activity to get to your cabin…and then the bar!

have a fantastic time where ever you end up!

We set off early for evening ferry didnt want to risk traffic. Had a walk round shops at Port Solent had a meal in the Italian (not the best) then drove to ferry nice and easy. Enjoy your trip.

We are doing it in reverse - getting the ferry from Bilbao to Portsmouth for the first time this Friday, 17th Sept. Any tips going from that end?

We use ferry twice a year no problems. Get there 90 minutes before if early you can park in port. If you have dogs like we do you can’t take pets out of port once you’ve checked in. I find it a bit stressful with the dogs but without them I think it will be much easier. Enjoy

Check your emails, they should have sent you one with current arrival times etc etc, our latest arrival time was 90 mins before departure on the 23rd August, to Caen.

We arrived early at the end of August and parked up by the fence on the left. It does say no parking until 22:00. We went to the security in the building who said there would not be problem. There weren’t any. Enjoy the trip.

Yes the smell of the ferry! We returned last Sunday from Roscoff and were parked next to an aircon unit, the van now stinks of rotting fish despite having a deep clean and being parked with all the windows open!o_O

There is very cheap fuel on the port itself so suggest that if possible arrive with a low tank!! When we left there 4 weeks ago, there were a lot of vehicles being checked by the Guardia as they came off the ferry.

Yes, same for you, fill up with fuel at the port.

Yes, there is one in Santander too. But you are not allowed to exit the port direct into the City since Brexit. So its a ball ache to get too.

If heading along AP67, there is Auchan at Haro or Carrefour at Miranda del Ebro

Many posters have forgotten to say. Take your travel sick tablets if you are inclined that way. We have had some horrendous sailings across the Bay of Biscay. After saying that, I hope you have a smooth crossing and enjoy your trip.

This is an excellent crossing and you’ll enjoy it. A mini-cruise some would say. Get there about an hour before sailing. We usually have a meal at Sovereigns which is part of the Travelodge building visible from the roundabout at the M275 turnoff. There’s parking at the rear. Alternatively plan a stop at either Cobham (M25) or Beaconsfield (M40) or similar. I’ve been on this route many times and the sailings have always been uneventful. These are huge ferries and normally very stable.
