Why?

Would you have known which car park was being referred to.
I've been going to and passing through Helmsley for 40 years, I didn't know there was a Cleveland way carpark.
Anyone could have parked up on the car park "slap bang in the middle of town"... The market place carpark, which is slap bang in the middle of town, thinking it was the one in question only to get moved on.

Its about 1 minute to walk to the town square. Am I missing something?
Yes, it's a great location (y). We had a couple of nights there last summer - along with a dozen or so other vans.

Chester, Little Roodee car park CH1 1SL
We use this one we were there last week £1.50 overnight then normal charges. But a word of caution while we were in our van we had made sure all our wheels were in the same parking bay, we watched as the parking man ticketed those with wheels in two bays. If you can get along the river you are fine

17 vans parked there while we were there for the Christmas Market.

One to add myself - Sandwich Quay Car Park. Not far from Dover if you're channel-hopping, and lots of good pubs there.

I know that you can camp in the car park in Bury St Edmunds, and that there's a park and ride near Canterbury. What others do people know about? We don't need any facilities, just legal overnight stops.

You don’t “camp” in any car park or aire, you “park”

Maybe he's referring to the 9 question marks.

The confusion over Helmsley illustrates a point which is important with any car park, whether those that allow camping or simply for parking. That is to ensure that you know the rules governing that specific car park before using it. These days most LA web sites carry details of both car park names and rules, especially where specific considerations apply to different sites.
