We have the Brit Stops book and have found it very useful. We have not used France Passion as we have always found sufficient Aires but people we have talked to like using these stopovers

Hi

We have used the Britstops (www.britstops.com) guide a few times over the past 2 years and found it very useful. In the latest edition there are many more stopovers, quite a few pubs but plenty of farm shops, vineyards etc.

On our 17 week tour of France in 2012 we stopped at a couple of France Passion sites and found them to be very pleasant. Like Artemis though we found so many nice aires we didn't have to use the France Passion book much. You are spoilt for choice for free / cheap places to stay in France.

Well we've used France Passion lots, and thoroughly enjoyed every stopover we've been to, so can recommend it wholeheartedly.

As for Brit Stops, you don't want my opinion cos I'm just a tad biased...

We considered French Passion but realised before buying that they are mainly (or entirely) out in the countryside. We prefer to stay close to small towns and villages so we went for the official Aires book instead. We have bought it three years running now and not regretted our choice once.

We've used britstops about 8 times this year and can recommend it. We've also joined France passion in anticipation of our French adventure in a couple of months time.

We used France passion for a couple of years but did not stay in many because there were so many aires as well as acsi sites to choose from . We have just got Britstops which we hope will be more useful because there are very few other free overnight options available . Will let you know how it goes when we have our September trip .

We've used a few Passions in south-east France. All were good and the best were in Beaujolais. We discovered the wine there is nothing like the rubbish that we had from there for Christmas back in the fifties. And yes, they are quite rural but quite a few are within bike or e-bike reach of the villages.

Britstops book is excellent.
In the planning stages for a short-ish tour using the options available.

France passion is considerably better this year now that they have put coordinates in the book you can plan beforehand where they are, before it was a bit of a game trying to find them and sometimes you could go miles and never see a sign of them, as usually all there is ,is a 6in round sign outside the gate, but even so they are usually worth finding and on most of them there is no pressure at all, in fact you have a job to find anyone at most of them but we do go out of season so perhaps they are not bothering so much then.

As Jim said, both are excellent. Aires are brilliant in France, but sometimes you just want a vineyard or a farm to relax in. We use both all the time.

Sticking to the guidelines we have always gone in search of the farmer to say bonjour and au revoir, and sometimes you feel as if you are more of a bother to them - but they are always very friendly. We had a conversation with one dairy farmer who couldnt's speak any english but we managed to find out why a cow had been left on her own, and was making one hell of a noise, she had just had a calf and was separated from her to make sure her milk came in (I think that was what he said anyway!) We compounded our 'bother' level by asking for ice cream the next morning before we caught the chunnel home, and his wife had to get up, come to the shop, open it up and serve us with the ice-cream - I feel sure she would have been happier to have not bothered and let us go with just an au revoir, but we feel we always have to buy something!

Yeah we have been there, couldn't see anything to buy, did talk to the farmer a bit though as Julie can speak French, and being ex dairy farmers we knew pretty much what he was on about, we also went to this one in the mountainsimage.jpg They had eggs and goat stuff on a table to help yourself but again no one about, they sort of went home at about 4 o clock and came back in the morning with vans and loaded up , presumably for shops and things, but didn't want to be bothered with our bits.

Looks lovely - much like the one near the tunnel. We stayed in an artists garden and were really worried about what we would have to buy from him, but luckily he wasn't there when we arrived or when we left, although his neighbour said it was ok to stay there! So we just posted the customary 'merci' note through his door and beat a hasty retreat! What he had on show in his porch looked very expensive!
