Can anyone explain the situation should Brexit go ahead
We have been taking our dogs abroad and bringing them back after 8 or 10 weeks away for the last 10 years.
All very straight forward:

All inoculations done
Dog chipped
Pet Passport in date
Rabies jab kept up to date
Vets in France give worming tablets 24hrs before returning
So all has gone smoothly.

However can anyone please explain clearly and FACTUALLY
If Brexit goes ahead on 31st January or before.
Will the above preparations still be sufficient to bring our dog back into the UK after/if Brexit goes ahead
or will we need to show a rabies blood test result as well

many thanks

Depends on a deal or not. Also depends if we become a listed country or an unlisted country. To be on the safe side we had our youngest dog blood tested (Titre test) as she didn't need it at the time we did her pets passport 7 years ago. We may need the certificate to show blood test result as the PP will no longer be valid for going out to France etc, mad really when the PP shows the blood test result for those dogs that had the blood test.
Thinking our older dog who had the blood test when we did her Pets Passport, would be ok, no seems not. Must have the new certificate. As her blood test was at least 8 years ago and have moved since, seems won't be able to get a health certificate from original lab. So now need to have the blood test done for her. This will be done next week, we then have to wait 3 months before going abroad (if Brexit has happened otherwise same rules apply as currently.)
All mad seeing as how we are a Rabies free country and others in Europe are not!

It's a minefield, and ever changing. Have you read the official guidance? https://www.gov.uk/guidance/pet-travel-to-europe-after-brexit#history
You'd probably be well-advised to seek out an 'Official Veterinarian' and speak to them about getting the blood test done. A fair proportion of dogs are failing at the first attempt. This means they are having to be re-vaccinated and re-tested - all of which can take several months.
We've had our dog blood-tested in order to try to avoid problems. We'd prefer to waste money having it done unnecessarily rather than not being allowed to travel with our dog.

My take on it? There are two issues: the first is that there should be no change in the requirements set by the UK to allow a dog back into the country from the EU. The second is what the French, Spanish, German, etc requirements will be to allow dogs from the UK to be temporarily imported. I don't believe anyone can know that as yet.

Been around the block a few times😉
As said nobody really knows.
How about the pets already on the other side of the tunnel would they be stopped on returning to the UK?

it was very easy to take dogs abroad before the pets passport .
it was bringing them back to uk that was awkward.
i took a dog out before pets passports she was fully rabied injected and titra tested . unfortunately she died in france. my last dog was all prepared and left in dec 99 . she actually had return papers as she was fully porepared but the scheme got delayed . i complained and tony blair arranged the paper work for her return before we left uk. again two rabies jab and tetra tested . ideal for entry to europe and re entry to uk.

No worries there it seems as per Gov.UK

There will be no change to the current health preparations for pets entering Great Britain from the EU after Brexit.
Your pet must have one of the following documents when returning to the UK:
  • an EU pet passport (issued in the EU or in the UK prior to Brexit)
  • the AHC issued in the UK used to travel to the EU (which you can use up to 4 months after it was issued)
  • a UK pet health certificate (for travel into the UK only

Response from Dept of Agriculture NI today....

Mr Harry ML

Your query relates to the implication for Pet Travel if the UK were to leave the EU without a deal.

A “Brexit Deal” has been agreed in principle with the EU, but has yet to be ratified by the UK Parliament. Both the UK and the EU need to approve and sign the withdrawal agreement. Only then will negotiations on new arrangements begin. Under the terms of the deal, there would be a transition period to prepare for new rules.

During that period, there would be no change to the current arrangement for pet travel.

That reflects the general consensus on here about what will happen. There should be no change next year to current arrangements. What happens afterwards will hopefully become clearer later next year.

Hopefully this will be the case, because if you search all I can find is information about travelling after b***** rather than travel out before and return after.

If you leave the UK before we leave (under any circumstances), the current regulations apply. The regulations for returning will not change after we leave (under any circumstances), ie you will just need your dog to have the worming treatment.
