Bremen to Hamburg

Going North of Hamburg next week and I was just wondering if any one has been this way recently. I am asking simply because the last few times on this section of motorway it has been a nightmare of seemingly non stop roadworks and I think I will go via Hanover if they are still there.

Might depend how far North you want to be, last time we came back from Denmark we went cross country and did a little ferry over the Elbe at Gluckstadt, which worked well other than there was a big wait of a couple of hours, going the other way was clear.

We came up there about a month ago and, although there were roadworks, we didn't have any problems.

We came south nearly 4 weeks ago and the roadworks were horrendous with long delays. This was early on a Sunday morning. We really regretted not taking the Elbe ferry as we had on our northward journey 5 plus weeks earlier despite the hours wait!

Unfortunately this has been my experience on my last few trips, even travelling overnight is not easy because they just reduce the lanes down to 1

These road works rte 7 have been going on for at least 3 yrs , I came thru north bound 11july ok north BUT the south bound was a complete mess for a long long way !! I will be very careful planning my timing going south in about 4 wks time , I am very flexible so ?

We also did it a few weeks ago on our way to Denmark, horrendous journey around Hamburg with the roadworks etc, we did however hit it in the evening rush hour

Thanks everyone, looks like a case of just make sure I've got all my 'goodies' between the two front seats and sit it out. In fact, as a lot of you know, its a horrible route from Calais, Antwerp isn't much better and I have found Bremen worse than Hamburg (for road works not congestion).

You know how to fill me with optimism! Looks like toss a coin time, although I've never used the ferry so probably stick with Hamburg 'out of hours'

So much for the Germans efficiency ! Progress is slow on that project , And yes Antwerp ring , without doubt can be a nitemare, so we are not alone with the M6 and M25 etc , euroland is not the heaven so many people think it is !

My experience as well, whenever possible I try and pass through at night and pull over once clear with a big sigh of relief

Well good luck anyone going this way in daylight. Travelled up to the Danish border overnight and not too many issues, travelled back last Thursday during the day, Hamburg, Bremen, Antwerp and all points in between a nightmare, it felt like the whole of the Germany motorway system was either under roadworks or hopelessly congested, set off very early morning and was lucky to make Calais before dark.
