I don’t know if this has been suggested before but, I started to think about members that sometimes breakdown, it could be in the UK or (let’s hope not) in Europe. I know that you all carry breakdown insurance, but may be you sometimes need just a spanner, or a place to park while you sort it. I then wondered if, there could be a mark/flag on members avatar or??? That would let members know, that should they breakdown that they could contact them if they needed “Local” knowledge or spanners, or “do you know a good local garage” sort of stuff, indeed just help, in the moment of panic/frustration.
Members if they wished to offer such help, could (if Jim was willing) contact him to place a “Flag” some place on the forum.
I think this sort of thing could be very helpful for instance in France or Spain (I spend quite a lot of time at my house in Spain)
I await your thoughts, does it run....or not, or should I just sit down and have a beer!! :D(y)

Could work. You'd need a register to tell everyone where we are geographically. That way you'd have an idea who's available in a certain area :)

It would also need an entry that covers the level of ability and competence of the Funster you're calling, as it's no good getting someone like Tootles out to help, all he can do is knit socks and plat wool

Would need a lot of managing for it to work. Think if I broke down I'd call my recovery and not a fellow Funster, as it may just delay the entire repair process :)

I think its a good idea. There was a report a while ago of someone being ill abroad their other half wanted to travel back with them on the medical transport their m/h was left stranded and the insurance didn't cover repatriation. This would have been a great help if someone knew a place to store the m/h or someone willing to help bring it back. Perhaps it would be better to have volunteers who all receive an sos and someone near responds if they can. It would help with not needing to know who is near to contact and there might be someone pitched a mile down the road who could help.Blunderbirds are go

Yes David, anything would help, I know that when I am at my house in Spain - it is very near the A49 Seville/ Huelva road - that if you need just somebody to ask something or just talk to, you would, in this part of Spain, struggle to find an English speaker and I am sure it is similar in other parts/countries.

But as I said it was just a thought to kick around.

Sounds like a good idea to me, a Breakdown Buddy system, maybe you could trial it on an informal basis at first and give it a whirl? Use a dedicated thread somehow for folk to post their willingness and location.

Helping each other out, always a nice idea (y)

I think it's a good idea.. has my vote ..

I'd be more than happy to give assistance or advice to help another funster

I envisage it as a service that is in addition to a breakdown service .. not in place of it..

like the 5th emergency service. :)

Yes, I have to say that is really what I meant, I know almost everybody will have breakdown cover, but sometimes you need, well, just a little more.
So you have phoned the breakdown service and you are a short distance away from a members house, he (or she) has local knowledge, that could be of help to you. As I think I have already said my house in Spain (a49) is in an area that is mainly Spanish speaking ( I know it should be, it's Spain) finding me in that situation may be of help.

I do agree though that it would need working out just how to do it.:)

We need some ideas to kick about then try to get some sort of system then finally get Jim's help to set it up

Just an Idea... needs some thought

.. a Google map,( like the one we have for members locations), with POIs of the Funsters home location.. ( can be the nearest Police Station or town center.. ) with contact information and any specialised help they can offer .. or even an overnight parking place..

For Example..
Member Joe Blogs . mobile 0789 65432112
can offer advice on local wild camping, garages, hotels, Cls, sites doctors dentists.. etc..
on a practical level can do electrical checks and fault finding and help with most motor-home appliances.. can also offer an overnight stop ..

This map can be easily accessed from any mobile phone, pad etc..

Wouldn't it be easier if the person asking for help just posted and anyone willing to help contacted them. Forget the google map etc there could be someone on a cl 2 miles down the road. It just needs people who would be willing to help to post on a thread so the e-mail addresses of those who may be willing to help would be sent a message when an sos is sent. It will mean a lot of people getting sos messages well outside their area but we all have e-mails to delete anyway!!(no thanks its big enough for the little use required).

No reason it cannot be both.. map and forum.. a forum for members to post on looking for help.. and a map they can access from a phone. .it's easy to set up a map and it only needs one volunteer to input the data ...

as you may not always have web access to make a post or look at the map.. or even a phone signal to make a call, the POIs could be available for use with a sat nav..

It was a good suggestion Bill, but with over 400 reads and only 12 people replying, I guess it's a non starter..

I think you are right on that one mate......oh well back to the drawing board :)

But if you need help ........or a beer as you come along the A49 Seville to Portugal road drop in at junction 53 (y)

I think its a great idea, I'd certainly be willing to help a fellow Funster who needed help, local info or somewhere to park up etc in my part of Spain.

Don't dismiss the idea out of hand because it's a good one! and, albeit informally, is already happening
I know, from personal experience, that a number of our 'overseas correspondents' take time out to help fellow funsters on a regular basis, both at home and abroad with translations, telephone calls and the like. Our Frankie (Yodeli), for example, may not wield a spanner herself but is a dab-hand at dealing with motor mechanics, organising repairs etc or just translating official documentation when our own language skills may be lacking
I could list others who have gone above and beyond, but suffice it to say that such support is totally invaluable

Cheer up Bill! As I said I'm up for it! So that's a few more than before you brought the Idea UP.(y)
I'm at 44.528053-0.240231. I have a reasonable workshop for our own vehicles and machines. 30 yrs experience-contacts in this region. Ample parking for emergency breakdown ,. A campsite 15 easy Kms away
I'm definitely not looking for business but here to help:) If some one wants to set up a call center (Yodeli),:sneaky:
they can PM me for my details.(y)
ps If you were thinking of a name for this enterprise I would seriously consider NOT using the Initials of you thread header:whistle:
