I'm posting this for info in case it is useful to anyone.
My current breakdown provider, European Breakdown, does Europe only, combined UK & Europe, and UK only cover, the costs of which to me are:
£75.99 - Europe only
£89.99 - UK & Europe
As we've had the cover for the last year they have offered me a renewal premium (with bit of a discount) of £84.99, however my MH is registered at 3850kg so I wanted to check we would still be covered if I renewed as I already knew that their 'quote provider' system now says that there is a restriction of 3500kg max weight on MHs:
After a long chat this afternoon I've discovered that we ARE still covered and they WILL cover MH's over 3500kg with the below understanding.
The 3500kg limit is ONLY applicable at the point when you need recovery on a low loader so even if the weight is registered above this (not stupidly above though!) as long as you can reasonably show it is not going to be over 3500kg you are still covered. Obviously if you have a massive MH even in standard trim and empty it is unlikely to be under 3500kg but smaller ones, like ours, could easily show that we aren't gonna weight a massive amount even more especially if you have an original plate showing 3500kg - this obviously assuming you haven't stocked up on booze etc on the way back to the ferry so the bum is skirting the ground!
The other thing I was advised about is the level of cover provided and this is where it gets interesting, there is less cover with a UK & Europe policy than a Europe only policy (assuming you already have UK cover elsewhere or you can buy it from them separately):
Europe only - repatriation/onward travel/return home of the MH in the case of an accident/injury/illness to YOU where there is no other driver to bring it back.
UK & Europe - no repatriation/onward travel/return home driver provided at all, none.
The reason for this is down to those who had the UK & Europe cover abusing the system, eg going to the pub and getting p*ssed then ringing to say they don't feel well enough to drive and asking to be recovered, and similar types of situations. As this is a combined cover they cannot offer better cover in Europe than they do at home on the same policy, hence why this benefit has been removed, however if you buy the Europe only cover as it's not linked to a UK policy they can include this benefit.
He gave me another example of how people take pee, a chap had a flat tyre on his motorbike and wanted to be transported 300km to the port for his ferry, they've told him no and they'll arrange for him to be recovered to a garage for it to be repaired locally, he can then drive on himself from there. Why he thought they'd transport him such a silly distance I've no idea!
In a nutshell if you have a MH which, despite being registered over 3500kg, means you travel below weight you may be able to take advantage of this breakdown cover.
