Check the contacts on the bulbs and the lamp holder to make sure they're not corroded. If they look OK then use a meter to check if you have power to the lamp holder.

many many years! since I was a kid
a squirt of contact cleaner sometimes works, but it will need replacing if it has failed. first job is to use a multimeter to test if it is working

1st start will always to be check the bulbs !

Do the bulbs work under standard lights being switched on ? Should be a stop & tail bulb, if lights work and breaks do not simply change the bulb.

If both brakes lights failed at the same time then it's most likely to be either a blown fuse , possibly caused by a bulb blowing , or your switch at the brake pedal.
As far as I know the switch at the brake pedal just makes contact when you press your pedal and the switch operates , so connecting both the wires together should make your lights come on.

Hi Bart, I dont want to sound stupid but am new to this.Is it easy to remove the switch and look for these wires just in case I cannot get it back together? Is there any diagrams on how to do this?

Sorry if this sounds condescending but is the ignition switch 'on' when you push the brake pedal?

If you type in "fiat x250 wiring diagram" as a Bing search, you will get several wiring diagrams that you can look at.

Normally unclip/unplug wires & then undo lock nut that holds switch tight & then unscrew switch. Reverse for refitting but make sure that you only screw in the switch just enough for the lights to go off when the brake pedal isn't pressed.

Thanks all for your suggestions are trying them all. Does anyone know exactly how to remove the pedal switch?
I just leaned under the dash there and took some pics .. the wires just disconnect via a plug .. just pull the lug the remove the wires .. not looked at removing the switch .. as would make sure it's duff before removing it.

Just pretend it is a BMW car as they have indicators and brakes lights as an option.

i used to check reverse lights by popping the connector out of the switch, and bridging the two terminals with a paper clip.. if they come on, its the switch

My guess is the brake light switch, as with most lamps they are activated via an earth switch so are always live.

The switches I've dealt with were bolted in place on the pedal box with a nut either side so you could fine adjust the switch. If yours is the same maybe the back nut has loosened not allowing the switch to work.

I have to say I'm not familiar with the new type of wiring where just putting the wrong wattage in will upset the system :)

I know my pick up runs earth switch for handbrake light and low fluid level

The switch on the brake pedal has 2 sets of contacts. 1 for the brake lights and the other for the ABS control. I have just had it replaced as 1 set went faulty. I did check the switch with a multimeter but couldn't get a reading from either set so assume there must be some type of electronics in it.
