I track my mpg in my vehicle (not the motor home so much) each time i fill up, and as this is a couple of times a week i have a lot of miles to compare.
As yet ive found no difference between tesco, esso, sainsburys and texaco for fuel economy. This is just using the basic diesel at the pump.
I'm gonna try the premium stuff for a while and see what that brings.
Depending on the engine and state of tune then it should make a difference. Last van was a remapped 3.0 litre Fiat and over 5000 miles of records the mpg improved from 24.5 to 26.8 based on spreadsheet data (not the trip). This paid for the difference in fuel costs

I have a 10 year old Kia Sorento, brilliant when we were tugging and up till now very reliable. In the past month when I fill up with Sainsburys diesel the engine cuts out when I put my foot hard down and it goes into limp mode and eventually stops. My local garage says low pressure in fuel line and it goes in to diesel specialist next week.
When I fill up at a regular service station it just doesn't happen, drives like a dream. Driving me crazy!

Modern diesels are designed to run on EN590 spec fuel, with which which every supplier must comply. There is no significant difference between bog standard supermarket fuel and branded fuel - it frequently comes out of the same tankage at the storage depot (try watching what comes out of vopak in Thurrock........)
The same applies with what comes out of the loading points at Immingham - it's all coming out of the same tanks!

Virtually none ! :)
I have absolutely no doubt the supermarket fuels are different and have caused a number of issues in vehicles all over the country. The biggest difference is the additives, but also minimum standards are just that. Its a bit like the different grades of oil, including synthetic, they all come from the same stuff, they are just further refined to produce the higher grades.

I also add some two stroke oil to my diesel on my x-type as it makes the injectors much quieter. If they were as good as new it may not have such an effect, but it does make the engine a lot smoother.

After advice from my local (family run) garage we only fill with supermarket in emergency and put in a tank of BP Ultimate once every 3 tanks. Peugeot 2.2 running sweet as a nut, and I do notice a difference when cold starting and on the smoothness of the drive. I don't believe it's a fantasy though as a Welshman the extra bucks make me .

In the past I worked in an engine re-manufacturing plant and can remember Shell messing up big time with one of their super fuels and having to pay for thousands of burnt out valves. So the big boys don't always get it right.

They didn't appreciate at the time that sulphur has excellent lubricating properties, as far as I recall....... A few other factors as well. I think Vauxhall were particularly affected. Both oil companies and engine manufacturers spend millions every year testing and researching fuel quality and burn characteristics, with considerable testing carried out on real samples of pump fuel purchased by "mystery shoppers"

Funny I have been banging on saying this for years, I always use BP, the only others would be shell or Esso.

OK I have literally bought into this thread.....for the first time I have put Shell Vpower diesel
in my Renault Megane CC 1.9 Turbo ...still half a tank to use.....result so far is better running on start
up, it appears to run smoother and quieter .....slightly better on acceleration...all good so far.
Still out on the MPG, will report on this at a later date.

A guy in MMM kept two years of fuel economy figures for his van using both diesels,,,,Result,,,,cost virtually the same. Van did more to the gallon on expensive fuel which overcame the cost difference but van drove so much smoother on the expensive BP and would think much less engine wear. BUSBY.

Yes I tried that a while back with the 2 stroke but it seemed to smoke more but I do say there is a difference in performance between the Supermarket and high street fuel and at the moment we can buy it same or 1p cheaper than the supermarkets. I personally prefer Texaco which gives me best return

Not long enough, but a little common sense helps..........
Never tried 2 stroke on MH tank, but will look for it over next few days and try it first in my car and then MH.
To be honest I see so many people queuing for "cheap fuel" in car's, lorries, and MH etc and yet how many reports of broken engines to you read about in the news? Yes I know about additives, but fuel is fuel. Until I read about engines failing every day because of the "cheap fuel" I for one will still be filling up when I see it for less.

But its not cheaper as you will get increased MPG with the better fuels...Penny wise Pound foolish. BUSBY:D:D:D

Again until I see the facts that you get more MPG ( how many owners notice the difference ). As many MH's owners drive around the 58MPH mark the they are getting best MPG anyway regardless of what fuel they are using!

Wish i could find the article in MMM but the guy in there checked his fuel consumption over a two year period using the tank full method not on board computer and there was no cost difference in the 2 fuels. he did say that his van ran far smoother on the non supermarket fuel. I would not put supermarket fuel in an expensive vehicle. BUSBY.

Busby, I have read said article, however one man does not cover the whole car, lorry and MH world. If on the other hand it was 1000 engines or more tested on the same fuel and the same weight and the same distance same route, then and only then would I consider changing...................

Every one to their own but have you checked your own van using both fuels....i have,,van runs smoother and 2 or 3 more mpg. only tested over probably 2 thousand miles though. I tend to be a big believer in Honest John in The Telegraph though....BUSBY.

Busby, the only way to know for sure is two or more different MH same route, same weight, same weather conditions and same distance over a period of months before you/they/them can say FACT that they got better MPG and the vehicle ran smoother. In your case it might have just been that the roads you travelled on were flatter smoother and there was little wind. 2 or 4 MPG over 2 thousand miles is not really worth paying extra for.

Much the same experience with the remapped 3 litre Ducato. Apart from the actual mpg of course..... Broadly cost neutral for me

Mate we could go on about this for weeks. At the end of day 1 x vehicle doing a test PROVES NOTHING. If the reports are true, why oh why are they selling so much of the cheaper fuel. The reason is this it works fine.

When my Subaru Forester started to sound rough the garage suggested using only premium desiel with an additive cleaner every 2nd tank full. I've only purchased Shell and Esso premium so far but both have given an improved running engine. The mechanics comments about cheap supermarket fuel was not complementary. On reflection I'm sure it's the cheaper supermarket fuel I buy on the continent for the MM may be causing some of the poor engine performances I occasionally experience. I'll certainly be trying a better quality fuel in the future. (y)
