New to motorhomes, had a camper van before this.
Hi all - on our first campsite with the Motorhome, and it’s lovely.

However, I’m having a bit of a problem filling up the fresh water.

MH is an Elddis 115, and the fresh water inlet seems to suffer from blowback when trying to fill, either with a hose or a watering can. Looking inside the filler pipe, it seems to go up, and is made of corrugated pipe.

So the question: is this normal and I should expect wet toes, or am I doing something wrong? What techniques have you honed to perfection over the years?

Thanks in advance

Rob

Up for a fill pipe is odd!
I also would have thought it would have had a breather pipe, so to allow air in as the water is drawn from the tank.

I don’t have anything for that to attach to - ours has a door that slides up and there is just a hole - no cap or anything.

The sliding cover is marked Whale. Anybody got one like this, or have we bought FrankenHome?

Used to have this on an earlier motorhome. If there is a drain pipe for fresh water that is accessible then fill it from the out rather than the in and the air all blows out the top as it goes. This worked every tine for me

Now there’s an idea. Yes, there is a drain easily accessible under the side of the van. Looks like it should be possible to push a piece of hose onto it.

The sliding cover is marked Whale.

In that case I suspect that you need the special Whale pump. I don't know anything about them - sorry.

I think the Whale may have been a red herring, if you’ll pardon the fishy analogy. The sliding covers on the external barbecue and shower are also marked Whale, so I don’t think there’s any clever pump-related stuff going on.

Some photos below, anybody got the same?

I think I may have the answer. The tank was actually full, despite what the water gauge said. Just got home and emptied the tank, and a LOT of water came out.

So next step, read the manual on how to calibrate the water gauge:mad::p

Thanks to all for the help and suggestions

I believe you have the system whereby you have to have the connector to attach to the inlet and then either a piece of hose connected to a submersible pump which you plop into the container of fresh water and obviously then have to plug in to a 12v supply run it, or a hose as shown above connected directly to a tap. AFAIK you can't simply fill it with a watering can or standard hose.

What you will find with a standard motorhome water fill is

1/ there is no overflow
2/ the older inlet pipe is corrugated - you can buy smooth bore to fit a £4.50 a metre
3/ the air vent come out into the filler so when it's full water come out of that too

We have found that the water fills better slowly but we use the cap when we have to - it has a vent so when full you get a small fountain

Thanks all for the information and suggestions. I’ve now done the unthinkable and read the manual:giggle:. It’s a brand new van, and it says that you need to calibrate the water level sensor the first time you use it. Looks like this hasn’t been done yet, so I’m going to give that a go.

The manual confirms what the dealer said, just fill with a standard hose or watering can.

One of these will do the trick [click]. Expensive for what they are but works just fine.
I’ve got one of those and had to fit a piece of Pipe on the side That goes in the tank to stop water coming out.
Stop!
They are MUCH cheaper than that!
Mine cost £6.00 from local caravan accessory shop and is vented and works brilliantly.

This sort of thing will NOT fit on the OP's inlet, it has to be a specific Whale connector

I don't know how you'll do that if, as you say, the pipe goes upwards ...

not long enough
I can’t believe any fill pipe will go upwards, might be an illusion

We have similar issues on ours , my solution is at home use a jet nozzle which forces water in, but still not too fast

or when on site I feed a length of hose into the fill pipe then turn on

👍
