Got up this morning and a Heron was in me pond, not seen a fish all day, I bet the greedy bugger has had the lot. Well miffed. My own fault as I took the net of 3 days ago that was there as a deterrent.

Sorry this has happened to you... Been there and wore the t shirt. :(

I did exactly the same a couple of weeks ago and then saw a heron. We only had 6 fish and I didn’t see any for almost a week. I’ve now counted 4 fish so looks like we lost 2. It seems they go go into hiding so fingers crossed you have some left.
shame it’s illegal to shoot herons

Yes I lost most of mine to something , probably a heron, a couple of weeks ago. Some of them must have been at least 15 years old and many had bred in the pond. Not happy. ☹

its a real pain, i did keep Koi carp had some real nice fish; Had being the operative word,

The heron took 8 young fish over 2 mornings ( expensive koi from Japanese stock at that ) and speared another 4 fish which were way too big for it to pick up causing infections.

I hate net covering as I think it spoils what you are trying to achieve.

"Electric fence comes too mind!!! apparently a Heron needs its feet in the water or at least at surface level to fish so a decent step down from the bank to water surface and a sheer wall like a swimming pool seems to reduce the risk...

We had the same happen a few years ago. The bloody thing was standing in the pond helping itself and it had the lot. Some fish were at least 10 years old.

Heron’s are a bird (them and magpies and cormorants) I could definitely do without!

We thought we had lost all our fish a few year back after a visit by the heron but after about 3 weeks they gradually starting appearing again. The heron won in the end though and we filled it in

I don't keep fish so quite like the look of herons we see a few in the river near here. This was last week with his snack!

Maybe your neighbour would like to come round to my garden, after lockdown of course ?

We get visited every now and then, I'm sure it must take some but we get so many fry every year it never seems to make any difference, around seventy goldfish at the last count and two huge koi which I'm sure would pull the heron in if it tried to grab them. Had the pond for about twenty years but thinking of giving it up as we are away quite a bit (well usually) since retirement.

We planted bushes around the pond and a hedge up one side, bit fiddly but keeps them away, however if you think a herons an issue try Otters, about 32 koi to 4 overnight.

This happened late last year, after so much rain raise the level of out local rivers, had to turn the pond into a fortress. This summer we are fencing all around the garden.

Its believed over 200 fish were lost in the village in about 10 days.

thats serious S**t

Yep, and your not allowed to touch the buggers, the council sent pest experts.....
to warn people not to go near the Otters

They don’t like starting pistols btw

I got rid of Cormorants on a fishing lake by buying some sprats and emptying a pot of paracetamol inside Each one and leaving them overnight in the lake . Took a week but no more cormorants . Might work for herons.

Its amazing how destructive they are.

Used to have same problem but put a roof not a cover over pond and they ain't been back

I built a number of fish houses- a couple of bricks supporting a couple of paving slabs, the fish can hide from the heron under them.
