The gasket around the door lock is leaching colour, is there a way of preventing this? I am not sure if replacing the gasket would be a solution in that a new one would also leach colour.
I would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks, checked with Southdowns and they only supply the lock complete with gasket. May try spraying the gasket with lacquer or replace with a large 'O' ring.

You could cut one out of an old bike inner tube. Very handy things, everyone should have one in their garage :D. Should be able to get one free from your local friendly bike repair shop.

Use a different material for the gasket as the present one is breaking down and will leak sooner or later.

You need to determine the thickness, before you buy then get something that is suitable for outside use.

If you can find a gasket maker, they will I’m sure sell you a square metre. At work we use Camthorne at Stoke on Trent

There is some staining above the lock also, so nothing to do with the gasket. The shape of the lock looks to be concentrating the flow from above to the outer bottom corners. Some leaching may be coming out of the rubber gasket, or could be coming off the lock itself. I would give it all a good clean up and then put a few layers of good wax polish above and below the lock so that any run-off would be less prone to leaving a black stain. There may be a product on the market that could be brushed onto the rubber to seal it. I would, certainly at this stage, leave the gasket alone.

Not sure that the gasket is doing the leaching, unless water can travel uphill by itself. Looks more like the usual grey streaks coming of the roof and accumulating where the flow of water down the wall when it rains slows down, i.e. above and below an obstruction

I'm not sure if its the gasket also. If you want to replace it, remove the gasket put a 1-2mm bed of Silicon RTV (room temperature vulcanising) compound on the surface after refixing excess can be wiped off with white spirit. RTV Silicon is used instead of gaskets when rebuilding engines, Pacer Pro Seal is one of the best brands, avalible at most auto factors and accessory shops or on eBay.

Bill thinks it could be that gasket breaking down, Bills just cleaned all our black streaks with the elbow grease solution £1 from pound land.
