I have never stayed and would avoid it to be perfectly honest.

there are plenty of places that are very safe that you can stay within a couple of hours drive. So if you have an early ferry, get up early and head for the port on the morning.

Used it twice last year,,,Few immigrants about but whats the bother. Think if they tried to enter your garage if you have one you would feel the van move ,,,where else could they hide? Underneath,,,not enough clearance,,on a cycle carrier,,,a walk round the van and you would see them,,,Just as with anything stay alert,,,BUSBY,,

I have done it, 2008. But not since. We stayed overnight at Camping Fuente Blancas. The actual pitches where on Grass/Gravel, but the roads are hard. It`s about a couple of hours from the port. (109miles according to my records)

We stayed there for 2 nights in March this year. No problem whatsoever, didn’t see a single immigrant. The only downside was that the ferry was cancelled due to bad weather. The laughable thing was that we watched the ferry arrive at 4.00pm in the afternoon unload, sit there all night, leave at 7.00am the next morning for Bilbao where we had to go to catch it at noon.

Okay, to keep it simple we stayed on the ferry port in BIlboa for 2 nights last March. We didn’t see any illegals and the police came round on a regular basis. We felt quite safe

I would not recommend it, We had to stay up all night as they were trying to break in our garage doors, I had to ring the police as they were trying to get into a hymer and the owners did not wake up. Security used loud speakers to tell them to leave the area, this lasted 12 hours

We came back in November 2017 and whilst there were quite a few illegals running around we didn't have any bother staying overnight at the docks.

I actually slept well that night. Even the nearby refrigerator lorry did not keep me awake. (y)

My only excuse is that I had already had my Horlick after all it was after 9.30pm. Bilbao should have read Santander

I have been caravanning for 32 years but in 2014 I have"gone over to the dark side"
We had trouble a Bilbao last October - see thread BILBAO WARNING from December

Copy of my post from that thread:-

If staying at ferryport overnight make sure everything is locked & secure and if you have a cover on your bikes my advice is to remove it!

We were woken at 4am in the port in October by someone "interfering" with our van - I got up and gave chase - turns out that something (perhaps even somebody?) was hidden on top of the bikes under and the cover the police found whatever it was in the morning and arrested 2 "illegals" I thought they were trying to steal the bikes not stowing something on top of them!!

Police did not contact me it was another motorhomer who saw it all and told me afterwards!

As I have said many times before. So many peaceful and quiet places to rest within 1 hour of the port. And Many Many more within 2 hours.

Why stay at Bilbao Dock?

Why not,,,,BUSBY:):)

Maybe because of posts #13 & #21 on this thread?

Just my opinion of course :)

The last place we stayed, an elderly lady came from the farmhouse opposite and asked would we like to fill up with fresh water!

Another reason.
