In the UK, you just need to make sure a numberplate and lights are all clearly visible. As long as the rack with bikes on doesn't cover them up, you're fine.

If they bike rack protrudes more than 1m past the original rear of the vehicle (normally taken from the number plate), then yes you do. If it doesn't extend more than 1m, then you don't.
Also, the bike rack / bikes mustn't obscure any vehicle lights and / or numberplate.

As always you all come up trumps 👍. The Lakes it is, then off for a tour of Scotland, along with hubby's bike, fishing gear, metal detector and Kayak. I'd best get some films uploaded 🤔. Thanks again 😁
