I have a laptop in my van and when on the road use my phone as a mobile hotspot and/or a MiFi box to connect to the internet.
Yesterday morning my new monthly allowance of 4GB started with BT. Overnight, Windows decided it was time to download an update (since it was connected to WiFi) and not only used up nearly 3MB of my August amount, but also 250MB above last month's allowance. Costing me £25 at 10p a MB) and leaving me with precious little data for August.
Surely it should be possible to stop Windows downloading these huge updates?

Can you not update windows to suit you and your allowances? I thought you could stop any update automatically and get a prompt telling you when it is due so as you don't lose your data allowance especially on a pay as you go tariff..?

Set the mifi connection as a metered connection then it won't update when connected to it.
I set all my connections to metered apart from my home hard wired ethernet connection.

Thanks all. MiFi was set for metered but phone hotspot wasn't. I'm surprised it isn't the default.

Yesterday I had to stop using the Win 10 lappy for more than 3 hours while it updated itself with new features and pray that it wouldn't kill the computer or delete my files. New features that I have no interest in and won't be using anyway.

Bring back XP, still the best windows version.

What’s this about “metered connection “ ? What is it ,what does it do and how do you set the various devices to do it please ?

In Windows 10 you can set any remembered wifi connection to metered. Just go to the connection and choose settings. Windows will then not download any updates when it is using that connection.

It also does not download any updated Virus definitions. So make sure you use a non metered connection every so often so that it can update them.

On the latest version of W10 there is an option to stop windows updates for 7 days.

I’m not on windows , I use an iPad and iPhone. Also an android phone, are these able to be set to metered?

You can set Android to manual updates under settings in the Play Store. Would think you can do similar for Apple
