Tick-borne encephalitis virus ( TBEV ) has been detected for the first time in ticks in the UK. ... The virus has been detected in a small number of ticks in Thetford Forest and an area on the border between Hampshire and Dorset. Further work is under way to identify the distribution of TBEV infected tick populations. How serious is this for Motorhome forest parking?

My Uncle qualified in brewing and went out to Ceylon near Kandy.

He contracted Encephalitis and died within 2 weeks at age 23. I do not know how he was infected, ticks or otherwise.

Maybe the teatment is better now but it can be dangerous.

I was not born then, but they named me after him

Mosquito repellents, Deet and Picaridin, protect against ticks.

According to the local news report, the local hotspot identified was the Dorset Hampshire border. Woods between Bournemouth and Ringwood specifically. There are a few llama and alpaca herds locally imported from abroad. Wonder if they are the source?

The current strain, appears to have originated from an Eastern European Strain. But is found all over parts of Europe. So its spread to the UK in not really unexpected with the largely unrestricted movement of people and animals.

Vaccines is available but you have to pay
Had ours but that was for travel in Europe (three jabs over six months for three years protection)

We have had first and second vaccine but will now get the third. It was recommended for Austria and Bavaria.
As I understand it infection is immediate and not treatable so worth considering the vaccine if going to an area where there is a risk.

How do the Ticks know you"ve had the jab and can't bite you for three years?

I'll be keeping all my clothes on the next time I take my dog for a walk in thetford forest ......
