Ok, so my van is gone and all being well I will pick my new to us van up on Wednesday.

This has led to a few pounds kicking around in my pocket for some extras to buy, (not bragging in these times just the way the deal went) . So it got me thinking on what I would like and or need.

I would like,

New Plates, cups etc,

A gaslow system

A new alarm,

What extra have you bought or already had that you have regarded as your best purchsase.
Jims motorhome checklist excluded of course as we all know that this is essential.

Thanks Brisley.
I intend having a second leisure battery. and as stated the gaslow. However I have opted to miss the solar panel as not needed for the ammount of time we are in one place. But what I would like to ask is the alarm? I looked at the vanbitz and I have seen similar at Dave Newalls and others but much cheaper. What is it that makes vanbitz teh dogs danglies? Can you or anyone convince me why I should spend the extra £300? Simply interested.
Regards
Paul & Nikki.

Hi Paul & Nikki

I have an alarm, a vanbitz alarm, A Strikeback T. Can I convince you to spend the extra £300? No. I can't say any more than that. Good luck with the new van.

As we are now hitting the worst seasonal weather, i'd place vehicle electrics at the very top of the list with plasma tv, satellite dish, and alarm at the very bottom and least of priorities. An alarm won't be any use if your electrics aren't in tip top condition.

Well worth having the underbody steam cleaned and waxoyled too.

In seriousness though, I spoke about the alarm to your receptionist , however I did not ask about alugas, which I believe is teh german version of gaslow? is that right? if so how much is it compared to gaslow and can it be provided for self fitting.

My Mio SatNav with powered speakers so that I can hear it above the diesel noise.

Rear Steadies so that the floor in the campsite toilets doesn't move up and down like there is an earthquake under foot.

Oil filled radiator to keep us nice and cosy and which is so quiet it can be left on overnight if it's particularly cold.

Replaced the original commercial style hard plastic seats in the cab with a couple of seats from a Citroen, cost me £10 for the pair from a scrap yard, they have been in use for nearly 100,000 miles, much more comfortable.

Well from me of course:Doh::Doh::thumb::thumb:

My "receptionist" is actually my wife and takes the title of Office Manager (I call her office totty though:winky:::bigsmile:). Alugas is a refillable gas cylinder made of aluminium and yes it can be supplied for DIy installation, I'll have to check up on the prices though.

In addition to all the 'comfort and convenience' extras, I'll put in a word for tyre care.
Of course, you may already have this from the previous van - if so ignore, but the info may be useful to others.
Make sure the jack that is supplied will lift the MH. And invest in a decent socket to fit the wheelnuts, a long 'breaker bar' (preferably with uni-joint so it will clear the bodywork) to undo the wheels and a torque wrench to do them up properly again. There is nothing worse than having to change a 'flat' in bad weather on the side of a busy road if you have to rely on the (usually puny) wheelbrace supplied. It's also worth getting a decent tyre inflator - the Interdynamics Inc 'Truckaire' is one that is up to the task of inflating commercial tyres.

Finally, get a yellow reflective hi-viz jacket - you'll need it for the continent anyway.

Best:- electrikery system that gives me mains power to all the vans 240v sockets at the press of a button without hook-up.

4 x 125Ah batteries, 2 x 75w solar panels, waeco mains priority inverter & sterling battery to battery charger.

Worst:- exterior windscreen covers. i hardly ever use campsites and when wildcamping i have the van ready for an immediate getaway if needed so the screens are now in the loft.

5 years but travelled for years
best and worst accessories

Sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference!

If you haven't already got one, an awning strap saves a worry or two when you're sat on a sunny beach away from the van and the wind gets up.............

Mosquito netting on a pole across the doorway held by two cup hooks...midges can get through fly screens.........

Those rolls of non slip matting from the pound shop save things sliding about on shelves and cut out noise.............

extending shower pole ( Wilkinson's) used to partition the van with a sarong tied on it , over the door as a door curtain.......

Sarongs- to use as sarongs, side panels attached to the awning for shade, tied across the outside of open windows for extra shade, beach towels ( take minutes to wash and dry unlike towels), sunshades tied to sticks and weighted down with stones, seat covers, tablecloths...the list is endless- I should write a book- 'Travels with my sarongs'......

Pre packed, part cooked bread and bread rolls ( do these count as accessories? maybe not- on my list, they're essentials so I can have fresh baked bread miles from anywhere to put my frazzled bacon in for my bacon sandwich and Asda's sundried tomato and rosemary is scrumptious)

An aero latte whisk was a great buy( £2.99) so I can have frothy milk in my fresh ground coffee..........

Two king size feather quilts ( cheaper than mattress toppers) one high tog and the other a lower tog. In winter, low tog one goes on the bottom, high tog on top and in summer the reverse. I don't need sleeping bags or sheets then unless it's really hot in Greece when I use a king size quilt cover on top instead of a quilt.

Light weight plastic tarpaulins- really cheap and handy for awning sides, groundsheets, bike covers etc.

I agree with others though- a second battery is a must.
