I have a satellite dome on my roof which I don’t use and wish to get it removed and use the cable hole to route to a Wi-Fi roof mount antenna/ aerial. I am looking for advise on the best one to get , probably 5g ready as I only want to do it once , and what router is the best for inside the Motorhome.
I find myself using Firesticks for watching TV now and my wife needs good Wi-Fi to be able to work when we are away in the van . Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

We did the same but used the redundant tv aerial hole. We went for the motorhomewifi deal. Not the cheapest, but the after sales is very good.

Poynting or Panorama mimo. We chose the Panorama and are very pleased with its performance.

and use a Huawei B535 router wired through a regulated 12 volt supply.

spend your money on a decent router, you shouldnt need an aerial then - have a look at the Netgear M2, though i am sure there are newer and better ones available if you have the money to spend?

I fitted the mimo to the RV this week on a pole, I did put post on here about.
The router is a Netgear nighthawk.

Thanks - that looks like exactly what I need.
There are several versions of this, all looking the same on the outside. This version, with '-12' on the end, has two mobile phone antennae for picking up a phone mast signal. Modern routers use 'MIMO', Multiple In Multiple Out,and combine the signals from the two antennae for a more reliable signal if one fades.

There is another version, the 5-in-1 with '-15' on the end. This has the same two mobile antennae, but also two local wifi antennae and a GPS antenna. You probably don't need the GPS antenna, but the wifi might be useful if you sit outside the MH when connected to the router. The wifi antenna can pick up the local wifi at home, or from a campsite or when parked at a friend's house.

There's a 7-in-1 version too, with '-17' on the end. This has 4 mobile antennae, and intended for routers with 4 MIMO antenna inputs. So far, most routers have only two antenna inputs, but 4 is better if you can find one.

I have the 5-in-1 type, with a Teltonika RUTX11 router that can do all kinds of things including using the GPS. Make sure the antenna you get is 5g-ready, it needs to have extra bits inside it to pick up some newer radio bands,

The spigot (think thats what its called ie thread part in the middle) does not look long enough to go through the body of the MH, when i purchased one from motorhomewifi they had an extension for this which was needed on my setup. Just one to watch out for.

apparently the Netgear M2 has an additional antenna connection, hidden away under the casing and the M1 has two.

Almost ditto here but with the Teltonika RUTX12 and the Poynting MIMO-3-17 waiting to be connected to it as the router has all the matching inputs. Pending delivery of the MoHo (hopefully later this month) I’m using it standalone in the house with its included rubber duck antennas as a supplement for our BT Wi-Fi, which it blows away in terms of performance and features. I’m also looking at the Teltonika Coin movement sensors being linked to it as added security for a trailer and quad.

I installed a Poynting A-MIMO-3-V2-17 7 in 1. Very easy, and super happy with the performance.

That’s what we did I installed myself it works really well and had a signal all the way down through France and Portugal using a Tiekom data sim😊👍👍👍

This isn't accurate. I have the netgear nighthawk, which is great router. However, there have been instances when I'll get no signal on the router and no signal on the phone, but if connected to roof antenna there are no issues at all. A good roof antenna has a considerably better range.

This is the panorama 4G/5G antenna used by MH Wifi. This kit has the longer thread for motorhomes. https://www.co-star.co.uk/16656/5g-lte-mimo-motorhome-antenna-kit/.
I had the poynting antenna previously, but it's huge. This one is much neater with great performance.

is your nighthawk the M2 or M1?

whichever one it is, i dont doubt your experience as nothing is ever 100% perfect ! i suppose the point i was trying to make, was to buy a very good router as that is the building block on which to start building a 'system'

i don`t want to hijack a thread but can you connect your own mobile to any of these antennas and use your own data or would you also need a router and a separate data sim card.
my kids have unlimited data and it would be nice to be able to use it.

We have a Teltonika RUT950/Panorama mimo aerial set up and are with EE, so we have a data only 4GB sim in the router and 160GB each on our phones. We gift/transfer data to the router sim as required.

i cant answer your question completely, but i can say that i have used a motorhome wifi system to connect to a mobile phone and then accessed data on the phone sim that way, by then connecting to the motorhome wifi system with laptop etc it gives a bit more 'range to wander' rather than just using the tether function on the phone.

the motorhome wifi set up also works brilliantly on some camp sites wifi ssytems, where you are only allowed to connect one device, it allows you to connect more than one device ... ideal to internet tv while someone is also using the same data connection for their laptop, phone etc. - of course its all dependant on how much data and strength of signal is available

hopefully someone with real technical knowledge will be along to provide a much more definitive answer.

The problem is, most mobiles don't have any antenna sockets, so can't be connected to an external antenna. They only have their own internal antenna. In many places this internal antenna will be good enough, but in rural areas away from phone masts the signal can be weak. In that case a bigger, better antenna will pick up a signal where a small mobile antenna won't.

The antenna can be attached to a router, which will connect to the internet with the phone mast signal, then allow phones, tablets and laptops to be connected by local wifi to the router.

interesting, so you gift your phone data to the teltonika sim

Yes, the way it works with EE is that it has to be the same account to transfer data around, so Liz has the account with EE and has her number, I have the second/additional number that an EE customer can have and then she also added the data only sim that we use in the router. The data only sim was only £6.40 a month with 4GB as it’s like a customer reward price. 4 GB is no real use for streaming but being able transfer as much of our 160GB each allowance over to the router makes it really useful.

I like that. I’m on o2. And was very disappointed with the coverage in Cornwall this year seemed a lot worse this year than previous years

I went the motorhomewifi route, and got the dealer to fit before I picked up the MH. The router is their 4G mobile one the you can disconnect and take with you as a portable wifi (which I've never done).

The main issue is coverage and I went with EE as that has the best UK coverage. Went to a festival in Farnham recently, where the mobile reception was awful on my phone (with an EE sim), but the motorhome wifi with a data only EE sim was excellent, so I guess the arial works fine. My wife also needs wifi to work from the MH so we just went for EE and not much cheaper networks.

As for gifting data, that is very useful. The data only sim in my MH is only 4 gig but I can gift data from the 2 other EE sims I have, although neither are unlimited data yet (waiting for an offer). BUT, if you have unlimited data, you can only gift a maximum of 100GB per month minus anything you have used, so if you have used 10GB in the month you can only gift 90GB. For this reason, I will eventually get unlimited data on my MH sim, reduce my personal sims and just gift data to them if needed. Watched a film on Netfilx recently and it used 2GB although I will check my netfilx settings as this does seem high. AND, when you go abroad, I think you only hve a limit of 20GB even if you are unlimited in the UK (plus you need their £10 per month EU add on)
