Thanks for all the advice.
As a direct result of this advice and quoting the web site, the dealer has changed his tune. The initial reason for wanting payment on 7th January is that we bought a 'stock' vehicle and it was our decision to wait until March to get latest registration plate.
The latest compromise is that I take delivery of vehicle mid January, as an unregistered vehicle, and keep on driveway until 1st March (approx 6 weeks). At which point they will register vehicle for me. I pay for vehicle when I get it in January.
Seems fair compromise to me - what do others think?
Will I be able to insure an unregistered vehicle?
Thanks for all your help so far. Joining site has been well worth it :thumb:
Well done, that makes more sense but do ensure it is insured as the thieving scroats don't care if it's registered or not.

Sounds as though you've made good progress. Try talking to Comfort Insurance - the motorhome specialists - I reckon they might be able to assist (no connection with the company, by the way, other than as an ordinary policyholder).

Good luck and enjoy the new van. :thumb:

Depending on your insurance company's attitude you should be able to cover it using the chassis number.

I understood that you paid a deposit on a vehicle for a 5th of March delivery and I would stick to that

I would agree with this, dont know how things will be effected like warranty will you use 2 months of it while it sits on your drive or will it start when you reg it.

Personally id talk to him and go for the original date and payment when collected.

How do you then check that everything is working
and what effect will this have on warranties etc?

Regarding warranty - vehicle warranties normally begin on the date of registration - in this case 1 March. Not sure if it's the same for the conversion or not? Would have thought so. Perhaps an issue to be discussed / negotiated with the dealer. :thumb:

Hi, We have just purchased our 1st new motorhome, and take delivery on March 5th (new number plates).

When we purchased it at the begiunning of December, we put £2000 deposit via credit card.

The company is asking that we pay balance (£48,000) on or around the 7th January. The balance will be paid from savings as opposed to a specific bank loan.

Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 only covers purchases with credit cards costing bewteen £100 and £30,000 .

Advice please - what is the best way to pay the balance so that I have some protection should the company go bust between now and the 5th March.

Seems very odd they ask for the full amount before you handover. I suggest that you pay half and the other half on handover that way you are covered. Good luck.

Yes, you should certainly be able to insure the vehicle on the chassis number.. In fact I have done it with cars, vans and bikes that are new builds and have needed a full SVA test ( so I can drive the vehicle to the testing station )

best ways to pay for new motorhome

I phoned my bank before hand to advise them of this transaction, so when i phoned on the day yo move the funds, all was ready to go.
This should sort out any problems beforehand about daily transfer limits.
The main banks use fastpay , so the transaction should happen in minutes. The only thing that may delay the movement would be any internal authorasations due to the size of the transfer, again, your bank should advise you.

It's nice that you can keep it on your drive, so you can get used to it, sleep in it and test it out.
It will be information overload on the day :ROFLMAO:

As the dealer has changed his views re payment, i do wonder how he will honour warranty work? This can be a problem sometimes as they already have your money.

Someone suggested earlier getting a professional to inspect properly beforehand on your behalf. A good idea as you are investing so much.
Also, you can refuse to complete the transaction until any problems are sorted, as this will encourage the dealer to get problems rectified.

Keep us updated, exciting times ::bigsmile:

What is the advantage of registering the van in March apart from the kudos of a new number which will last only six months? I would suggest from the amount of concern you've shown that it would be better to take delivery in January and use the van.
If there is a trade in difference in price when you change it remember that difference will be averaged over the number of years you own the vehicle and so may be negligible. Buy now and enjoy it from day one.
Happy motorhoming.

Better still, buy a personal number plate ( About £280 for one from the DVLA web site ) and it becomes ageless
