Best way to make up a rear bed that is split singles / kingsize (1 Viewer)

Hi,

This is the first time we have had a van with the rear fixed bed which is more like 2 singles with an insert in the middle a foot or so shorter.

Are there bespoke fitted sheets for this? Do you just make do with a King Size? or 3 x Singles?

We got 2 single fitted sheet ( they may be for something described as a small single, I can’t quite remember !) and then I made a central section myself.

I find the stretchy fitted sheets from Lidl .S-D-and KS easiest for my needs lightweight an dry quickly .
Looks like 3x singles maybe?

I've often wondered about this arrangement, myself. Separate fitted sheets or throw a couple of Duvalets over (not that I've any experience of those). Duvalets may allow you to "change your mind" about the orientation.
Personally, I would discard the middle portion and commit to single beds only at the back. It usually affords more floorspace and easier access during the night.
When you want to get "friendly", you could use the drop-down.

THANKS for all the replies.

The middle part is actually part of the bed, over a large garage so removing the mattress here wouldn't achieve anything as the wooden sprung slats are fixed underneath. I get your idea though.

Getting "friendly" only happens once a day on weekdays and twice a day on weekends if I'm lucky. So I'm sure we can work around it! (I "may" have exaggerated here, slightly)

We have this configuration and just use ordinary single fitted sheets. The mattress in the middle obviously requires some wrapping and tucking of the excess fabric but once done and put back in position it all looks good. We have two single duvets which get folded under at the inner edges so they don't overhand and cover the middle section during the day with a reindeer pelt.

As others have said, two fitted single sheets and wrap the centre part in a sheet.

We are on a second motorhome with this layout. With both the infill went into the attic and was never used. We used the wooden top in the middle as a bedside table and also assisted us getting into bed. Then used stretchy single (2' 6") fitted sheet and single duvet on each side. Works well, as one can get out of bed in the middle of the night without disturbing the other.

Edit, just seen your post #7. You seem to have the worse of both worlds. Not really 2 singles and not really a huge king sized double. Not sure what to suggest really.

We were considering a similar bed layout, but that MH since sold.

We like sleeping next to each other so thought we might sleep diagonally across middle section.

Does this work?

Are the joins in the mattress uncomfortable? We are used to one continuous king-size mattress.

If it works, then there is the sheet problem. I presume the real answer is to have a fitted sheet made-to-measure (or in our case three, as we travel like that)

We have a similar configuration and we each have a double duvet. Fold it in half and sleep on one half and cover up with the other half. Works for us. I also made some covers for the mattresses to keep them clean.

Another option for the infill piece in the middle is to use a fitted cot sheet. The only issue there is that if you want to colour coordinate with the rest of your bedding it might not be possible.

I looked at a Carthago 'Liner for Two' the other day. it has a similar-shaped (twin or double) bed at the front, that drops down. I think I saw the same layout in a Hymer about three tears ago.
Not only do you have the bottom sheet dilemma when making the bed, but each time you raise and lower it, the sheets will be pulled out because of the flexing in the middle as it folds to the shape of the roof.
That could be rather irritating for someone paying a premium for a van without realising they'd need to straighten the bottom sheets every time the bed is lowered.

We already had 2 double mattress toppers going spare so I cut each one down to fit the singles and then put the topper and the mattress together in the topper covers and pinned the excess material underneath*, this ensures that the topper doesn't skit around on top of the mattress as it can do if you have them separate (* I did this as it is much easier to put the mattress and topper in an oversized cover than one that's made to fit). I the bought some double fitted sheets and duvet sets cheaply and made the fitted sheets narrower to perfectly fit each single mattress allowing for the tapered corners etc, we just have to remember which bed they belong to when re-making them!

I found the single quilts we had a bit too wide for a van conversion so cut them down a bit and likewise the covers, but we also have some normal sized singles which we can use underneath them for winter camping with the narrower ones on top.

For the centre cushions I found that a pillow case fitted each one perfectly so that's what I used which obviously matches the existing bedding, however I've now removed the one nearest the steps and instead using some of the foam I'd cut off the toppers, made a 'pad' that goes the full length of the centre section and used the excess material from the duvet covers to make a large 'pillow case' cover for it, this topper is actually a bottomer as it goes under the rear centre cushion and the front cushion is left out, so just the topper is there, makes it a bit easier to get in/out of bed and the dogs can climb up and get down easier (yes I know I spoil them!).

This is the bed before I removed one of the centre cushions (we sleep with our heads forward rather than to the rear):

We already have a goose feather winter weight kingsize duvet which we’ll use during the winter and have a rethink before we leave the Uk in April, bound for Greece.

Think about how you will get in and out. You may need steps. How will you access the storage underneath?
I like the twin single solution, but only when it's left that way. Much easier to get up and back without disturbing your partner.

Ah, so something like this? First thing to do if you intend to use the ladder it put some padding on the rungs (pipe insulation) as it will hurt your feet otherwise.

Yes exactly like that! However looking at those pictures I can see my cunning plan of being able to access the underbed storage via the cupboard doors isn't going to work. Oh well, looks like it'll be three single sheets.
Thanks for the heads up re the padding on the rungs.

Another thing to consider is the way that any under cushions lift. Some allow the head to be raised and some others allow part to be raised at the lower end to give better access to a wardrobe. I cannot imagine why, but Carthago hinge theirs along the outer wall rather than across the bed. Such things can make it impossible to lift if the base is covered with a continuous sheet.
