Evening everyone, I've bought a Huawei e5577s router and am wondering what recommendations people have for data only Sims for use in Europe?. I'm planning a three month trip but not expecting to use the internet heavily,
Thank all.

I cant help but this thread may be useful for you

you dont need a data specific SIM, I am under the impression all phone Sims will work in the mifi unit as long as they are the physical size needed to fit the slot. ( you are probably aware you can adjust the sim size ).

A good option would be to by local sims in the country are in.
I think all the new UK contracts are capped at 20 or 25gb a month and a lot max of 2 months roaming.

We live in Spain and took our 3sims over last year, husband told that 3policy now only to allow use of sim for 2nonths in any 12 in the EU, also restriction for all networks to 12gbts I believe! I know in Spain we can get sims at very reasonable prices, no contract and unlimited -I also understand no restrictions for the UK at the moment too!

We're using Sky Mobile right now in Spain, no restrictions planned and allows you to piggyback unused. Not sure if it will work in a mini but pretty good tethering as long as the phone is by a window.

We bought a Reglo sim in France (from LeClerc), you can change the monthly data package each month if needed so we keep it at €3 a month if we're in the UK and then up it to whatever we need whilst in France. We use it in a router with no problems (y)

EE cap at 50gb. We have a cheap sim only for the mifi ( also on ee ) to gift extra 50gb both to that and another phone without sacrificing my own 50gb roaming.
Smart plan has roaming included or you can have a plan with £10 bolt on.

Have same mifi as you. Have been buying local Orange sim in Spain. €20 for 35gb data and they give you another 30gb free so 65 gb in total. Works great and the girls in the orange shop are so helpful

I think a "MiFi" unit is a type of antenna, and not a router, a router is a router.
A MiFi is i believe a type of antenna that is best used when the router is static or does not move, the MiFi unit is "Pointed" towards the best signal. These are i believe best used from or fasted to a "Pole" where you can elevate them to get an even better signal.
These are different to a mobile antenna that you fix to the roof of a van.
As for the sim card, they usually come with snap out feature on the card, you can snap out the size you need.

To use this service i think you have to order your sim card. I think they come from Canada.
Then you buy and assign to that sim card a "Data Package" of your choice.
I also think that you get an "American" phone number.
I am not using this service so have no knowledge of how good or bad or how expensive it is.
I merely show the link for your info.

Not my understanding of the term ‘Mifi’.

The e5577 is a mifi unit that a sim is placed in and is capable of supporting upto 10 devices.
So effectively is a mobile router using mobile data.
In addition antenna can be added to it to improve reception.

As i say, "I believe"................
What do you think a "MiFi" is, describe it please.
A mifi is a mobile data hot spot. The term mifi I believe is a brand name that has been expanded. Rather like the term Hoover to many of us is used to identify a vacuum cleaner.

Does this SIM work in Portugal? In general are SIMs from the one valid in the other? Off on our first MH trip to Europe in two weeeks!

As per the links in bold in my and your posts, essentially a mobile router, although it’s now a generic term for the device rather than a trade mark/name - as Hoover is to vacuum cleaners.

I can except that, it would appear that the term "MiFi" has been applied to a router that takes a sim card, there are good and bad, big and small.
I was using the small ones 5-6 years ago in rural provinces in the Philippines.
I have fitted to the roof of our "Van" just today, a Mobilemark SMW-311 Omnidirectional multiband antenna that also uses Glonass as well as GPS, connected to a Netgear Nighthawk MR2100
Purchased with the intention of using the Superdrug Unlimited Sim, thank's a lot Superdrug.

at a guess as Spain and Portugal a re part of the EU i would think the same rules will apply as per when the UK was a member, i.e. the whole of your contacted data and cals will be available to you at no extra roaming costs.

BUT

i am speculating

Bear in mind that most of the UK data providers are going to charge £2 per day when using data outside the UK, this will be an extra £180 for your 3 month trip. Not sure but I believe that Virginmedia and O2 are the only providers that are not going to apply the £2 roaming fees

I can't speak for all networks but my Spanish sim has defined limits allowed for roaming.

Thanks MikenPauline, with a local sim is usage still capped at 12gb? Or does that only apply to UK Sims?
