Woodhead to M1 then A57 Worksop to A1, A14 then M11,A130 to Colchester and Harwich.

Or M6 south then A14 as before, if you want to avoid the M6 around Birmingham then cut across the A50 from Stoke to the M1 and then join the A14 as before.

not long enough
It’s not a good journey

The cross country from Stockport east is never good, nice roads just far too busy

I would go down M6 then straight on to A14, think it becomes the A45 around Cambridge

We do the route 5/6 tomes a year when visiting. We use the snake pass, then sheffield. From there Worksop to A1, then A14 to Ipswich, A12 to Colchester/Harwich.

I know you are heading to Harwich for your overnight stop, so guess you will be in East Anglia in the evening.

There may be nighttime closures on the A14 in the Bury St Edmunds area. There were a week or two ago. If they have finished, the A14 would be your best bet.

Someone above stated A130 to Colchester but probably meant A120. However that road is only single carriageway from Braintree to the A12. Best avoided any time when commuters might be on it. Probably ok after 7pm.

Whenever we go out in the evening now, we do a search to determine whether these main roads are actually open. The signed diversions are ridiculously long if you are in a car but may be sensible in a motorhome. The A12 was often shut from 10pm a year or two ago, but now the overnight closures seem to be starting at 8pm.

Whichever way you go initially, it’s difficult to find a good route to avoid the section of A14 between Huntingdon and Cambridge with its long stretch of 40mph average speed stuff. We’ve had three good journeys out of four recently, so it could be worse.

If you use A14 allow for around 30 minutes delay between Huntingdon and M11 - major roadworks not due to finish until late 2020 I think. PITA!
