Best route and stops for Portugal

I’ve done Calais, Rouen, Poitiers, Bordeaux, Irun, Burgos, Salamanca, into Portugal to near Viseu. Stops all depend on your driving preferences really.

We started in Dieppe so our route/stops were Honfleur, Vivonne, St. Symphorien in France.
Then Zumaia, Burgos and Gallegos de Argañan in Spain and entered Portugal at Vilar Formosa.

Have a look at Campingcarinfos. It is a French site but easily understood even if you don't speak French, it covers all Europe and you can plan your stops to suit yourself.
We usually do Calais Rouen, Tours, Potiers, Irun, Burgos, Salamanca and then either into Portugal or go on down the free motorway to Seville and then into Portugal
We never rush but the timing of your ferry makes a difference as to where you stop, usually Buchy first stop then just south of Tours then Cap Breton, Palencia, Caceres. They are all free aires which you will find on Campingcarinfos

It depends on whether you want to get through France as quickly as possible, I did Nouvion, then Utah beach, then mont St Michelle, then Il de ré, then biscaross then irun, I then went across to alicante, but from irun you could go across and down into Portugal.
