Are 12v cool boxes any good & if so which ones please? Thinking about cold drinks on rallies as fridge only just has enough room for food:doh: Alternatively is it better to freeze ice packs & use them with a normal cool box?

I have an older Halfords 40 litre, serves us well when we use it.
This is the later model and just as good

many many years! since I was a kid
we've also got an Aldi/Lidl powered coolbox. excellent as a backup and for cold drinks. the only issue is that the 12v side draws too much power to be left plugged in on rallies without hook up available. maybe less of a problem if we had more solar panels to keep up with the drain and unplugged overnight

In answer to your question, the best ones are the CFX range from Dometic/Waeco

They're expensive but will guarantee about -22 in any ambient condition, and when on 12 volt use on about 35watts

They have a proper compressor system like your fridge and and freezers at home, hence the efficency and cost

Thank you for your replies -looks like cheap ones use too much electric (only 1 solar panel & 1 battery) when off EHU & top of the range ones use less but uber expensive. Think we will use a standard cool box & ice packs !

Bought the Aldi one yesterday, and so far so good! Works well, and the essentials are nice and cold (beer!)
According to the paperwork - draws 47amps when on 12V.

47 amps, that can't be right surely. Could it be 47watts ? (just under 4amps at 12v):whatthe:

Edit, just checked. the mains adaptors sold for these cold boxes are rated at 6amps so probably 4amps is about right.

The Aldi ones become noisy after while. They eat batteries. If you have the room a far better option is a 3 way. I have an old Dometic 3 way in the garage which runs off a dedicated gas bottle when off hookup, 12 volt when on the road and mains when on hookup. It will hold more than enough beer for a party and will chill down to zero if turned right up.

I use a Coleman igloo box it's a super insulated box you just throw a couple of bags of ice in over the top of the drinks ......usually keeps ice cold for 5 days or so it was invaluable on our last trip
