If you're plugged in, you might have main powered water heating available. Note that this is slow. Some people don't feel any change in temperature after 10 minutes and assume it's not working. Make sure you've got 240v at the sockets to check it's not tripped.
You probably also have an option of gas powered heating. This will be faster (but still take a few minutes). Make sure the gas is switched on by checking the hob. Gas heating runs a fan that takes a few amps from the battery (mainly on startup, but reduces after a few minutes), so won't work when the battery is flat or weak.
For the controls, older systems generally had selector for electric that was on/off or maybe a selector for the power output if it had multiple heater elements. Gas tended to have a separate dial with a temperature selector and an on/off selector.
