Our original plans to drive to Singapore have had to change. After a week or more contacting embassies, consulates and many advisers it just seems to be impossible to drive across China and Vietnam. So we are going to Beijing via Italy, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The homeward trip is via Mongolia (across the Gobi desert) Russia, Belarus and Poland. 25,000kms and 7 months. I'll be posting to my blog whenever I can.

Each to his own. Iran should be interesting. Fortunately we travel with a Dutch couple and some Danes and Germans for most of the trip and essential in China because their version of MI5 keeps a very close eye on you and you have to stick to a pre agreed route. Still it will be fascinating to be in Beijing this August. We have been working on the route in detail and find we have to cross the Taklakmakan Desert. I had never heard of it and was well cheered up when it is described as the bleakest place on the planet.

For those who really want to plan some exciting journeys I suggest you buy a book entitled "Dream routes of the World" by Insight Illustrated.

Oh well to the maps.
