Hi all,

As we continue our search for our first MH, I would be interested to find out what I can expect to pay annually for insurance?

Is it something that is affected by the fact we have never owned a MH before? Are there some models that fare better when seeking quotes? Is there any factors that greatly adjust the insurance price, i.e. trackers, reversing aids, alarms?

I am assuming it will be just the same as cars with regards to options - Fully Comp or TPFT.?

Hi and welcome to Fun. I'm on my 3rd year for insurance. Like you, I expected to pay a huge premium for cover and did get some quotes that were, quite frankly, ridiculous :(

I shopped around and now use The Insurance Factory, under written by Aviva. Fantastic fully comp cover and lots of extras. First years premium with zero no claims was £380.

Below is this years quote. I love the full unlimited Green Card cover and full UK/Europe AA Roadside assist. Definitely gives peace of mind.

This is my new quote on my 3rd year on fully comp Motorcaravan Gold+:

Based on your current information, we have offered your Renewal at a premium of £323.01 for your Motorhome insurance policy.

This is based on yourself only to drive for a 12 month Comprehensive policy based on your Fiat Autotrail Dakota

Key points of the policy is:
* £200 Damage Excess
* Windscreen cover up to £3000 (Subject to £75 Excess
* Caravan and Camping personal effects up to £3000
* Trailer Cover provided up to £3000
* Includes Legal Expenses Cover
* Unlimited 365 Day Green Card Cover
* Cover for Awnings, Generators and Gas Explosion
* Annual Mileage Based on 4000 Per Year
* Full UK/EU RAC Breakdown Cover Included

When I swopped my caravan for a motorhome last year ,as I was insured through the caravan club scheme I thought I would get a quote from them ,they were not interested in my 5c insurance with several years no claims and quoted me ....... £678.. Of course I never took up this generous offer and got a deal out of safeguard for £256 less , still too dear but much more affordable ,will be looking around for better deals layer this year,

Insurance premiums will vary wildly, so little point in asking what other pay. It's based purely on risk - personal, area, value etc ... and what the insurer can get away with.

Based on the value of the MH - you find that some insurers will insist on a tracker and / or alarm.
Ours already had a tracker fitted (we just had to take over the account) - made quite a big difference to the premium.
Never seen the point in an alarm - everyone ignores them, don't they ? Although I guess some might argue that if the miscreants think there's an alarm fitted they'll move on someplace else. Maybe just fit a flashing led on the dash then ;)
Some will give a discount if reversing aids (camera and / or sensors) are fitted.
Ours (Caravan Guard) offered a small discount if a tow bar is fitted
You can't transfer your car NCB to the MH - although some insurers will give an "introductory discount".

Just avoid Adrian Flux. Have had bad experience of them.

I was pleasantly surprised when we insured our motorhome last year infact cheaper than the car and worth a lot more. First year we used Aviva via Motorhome Facts website and this year went with Safeguard due to the windscreen cover.

Also you can use you cars no-claims bonus with safeguard if you wish.

AIB will if "Pushed" get you what you are looking for at a very reasonable price.......Safeguard want to sell you expensive breakdown cover as standard.
Another decent quote i got was from a broker called Scenic that gave me a decent price through Highway.

I started with Safeguard 7 years ago and used them for 2 years. Then switched to Comfort and have been happy with them since. For me it costs about the same to insure the motorhome as the car - ballpark £300 or a little more. The Comfort deal includes European recovery and home start. You may get a better rate with an approved Cat1 alarm installed (some insist on one) and, if you have a satellite dish/dome, Comfort give a discount if you have a reversing camera!!! Stick to a broker or insurance division that specialises in motorhomes.

Hi we just done our first insurance with AIB £320 for full cover and breakdown. (y)We did get quotes for tracker and without tracker. Not worth paying for in our opinion as the tracker we are having fitted at van bitz has no subscription and they will not recognise that:( But why pay £100+ per year to have it tracked to save £40 and I can track the van myself. Maybe I'm wrong:)

Well I must say, I am pleasantly surprised...

Ive done gocompare.com and they have come back with around the £140 mark as the cheapest a few times.

FluxInsurance seem to be the cheapest.

Possibly going through as Classic Vehicle Insurance??

Possibly your postcode too, as your MH will historically spend months on your drive. Ours is very poor as three "risk" areas fall under our BL * one.
