Silly question but whilst in Germany in the autumn we bought a couple of crates of beer from the supermarket, the question is does anyone know if there is a deposit on the crates? We will keep o e as its handy for storage but wondering what to do with the other one and for future reference.

Thank you.

Yes the crates usually have a deposit. Sorry can’t remember how much.

We visit Germany quite often, not sure about the crate itself, but bottles are deposited, as are the cans. In Germany they have supermarkets just for drinks (all sorts) every body in Germany buys beers by the crate, and return the empties in the crate and just get another crate of full beers, the beer stores are the size of our Tesco, and what a selection, roll on June. Most stores have a very clever machine where you just insert the can or bottle, it registers the items and produces a voucher, hope that helps.

You should immediately book a crossing, and drive all the way back to Germany to return said crate. No point hanging onto it is there........
And whilst you’re there, buy another one, with beer in it. ?

From memory it’s 24 cents on each bottle

We were there over the Christmas, new year, we returned cans but not bottles, the deposit on the cans is 25 cents, not sure about bottles. We get canned beer from Lidl (500ml) and they are about 50? cents, 25 cents back SUPER ?? seem to remember there’s no return on spirit bottles ?

Yes there is a deposit on the Crate either 3.25 or 4.50, deposits on bottles/cans are different depending on whether they are glass, type with the swing-closure or plastic from 8 eurocent to 25. The can be returned to Getränkemarkt (beer shops on steroids), Supermarkets and Lidl/Aldi.

Thank everyone, too late for the bottle deposits hic but will put the crate in for next time and will remember to keep the empty bottles.

There is a deposit on the crates and the bottles. I probably have around 10 at home, but never have room to take them back.

We go to “Rewe” another big store, if you have a crate the machine takes the crate, counts the bottles and the crate and expels a voucher

Bottles or cans only have a deposit on them in Germany, if they have the following logo printed on them (25c):
