We have a new bed, that has a piece cut out of it, so that it measures 205cms long and 136cms wide, but is reduced to 114cms wide, for the bottom 85cms

It is a transverse bed, and a tight fit, and we are struggling to fit a mattress protector, a sheet and then a duvay

Is there an alternative solution, that doesn't cost too much, bearing in mind we do not have any sewing skills?

TIA

Try Duvalay. They make to measure. Also other companies do the same

I sleep in a double duvet, folded in half. Much more comfortable than a sleeping bag, less bedding to carry and change and easy to put away, or change for a lighter tog if required. If there's two of you, you can face the folds towards, or away from each other, depending on how well you are getting along on any given day!

Clickem - our transverse double tapers to 120 cms wide at the foot.

We have a Silentnight Airmax topper double* that fits surprisingly well without alterations because the structure allows this without overhang or ridges. A simple double fitted sheet elasticated all round also fits well. Inexpensive and comfy.

The duvet is a bit big for the bed but the advantage is there is still enough for me (just!) when SWMBO wraps herself like a sausage roll.

We had to cut a topper corner off and bedding just fold underneath the mattress so no made to measure
needed.

By Duvalay I assume you mean a memory foam type topper? Forget a mattress protector, just cut the corner of the memory foam topper, safety pin the flappy edge of its cover underneath, the use a fitted bed sheet over the whole lot - ie topper and mattress, again safety pinning the flappy bit underneath, works at treat and ensures the topper doesn't try to go walkies!
